PHANTOM OF THE OPERA: A Timeless Date

So, you are an hombre with appreciation for the finer things in life, and you decide to take your lady friend to a romantic dinner and a Broadway show. Perhaps to one of the most well-known productions and the longest-running show in Broadway history – The Phantom of the Opera. After all, what other show can convey a romantic, touching story in such a way that it will stay fresh and exciting for over two decades?

The Phantom has everything you can imagine in a melodrama: a dream, the magic of falling in love, the power of fate, the power of determination, a sparkling success and stardom that turns into a torture, a bizarre love triangle, rivalry, burning with desire, a tragedy of unrequited love, an obsession and the pursuit of something at any cost.

And then, of course, there is a spellbinding man in a tuxedo and mask. There’s something so alluring about that mask! What secret is he hiding? And what does it take to discover? The show has a certain feel of a fairytale, a very dark fairytale, in fact. There’s a whirlpool of emotions to make you feel alive.

But wait, The Phantom has a big surprise for you! It’s not your typical story of heartbreak. Intelligent twists of the plot will keep you on your toes, walking through the labyrinth, solving riddles. Watch out for the clues – there’s always a motive, a warning and a door left open for escape. There’s a healthy portion of humor. If you are hungry for some bloody action and striking stage effects, prepare for the wild gunfights and flying chandeliers, all in the midst of fire, smoke, and even thunderstorms!  There’s even a real celebrity feud involved: Roger Waters accused the composer Andrew Lloyd Webber of plagiarizing his song “Echoes” for sections of the musical, but decided not to file a lawsuit.

Speaking of music, it will take your breath away! The title song will probably be playing in your mind for days to come. Andrew Lloyd Webber (who is also a co-writer of the book) created something iconic. Hugh Panaro, playing the twisted evil mastermind Phantom, is provocatively dramatic in the role. You will love Trista Moldovan as Christine Daae, she has an melodious voice. And Kyle Barisich adds a touch of Prince Charming to his character Raoul.

If you ask me, the best way to experience The Phantom with your date is going to a matinee. Romantic as it sounds, the idea to go to an evening performance, let’s face it, is a little too predictable. There’s something so irresistibly hot about being spontaneous! Imagine that rush you’ll feel as you walk into the dark hall from the bright daylight, guiding your lady by the hand to your seats immersing yourselves into the world of mystery – a striking contrast with a busy street!

Dare to add another unexpected twist to your colorful date to make it a night to remember? Agree to meet her by the venue. Put on a mask and surprise your charming companion by presenting her a red rose in front of the large crowd waiting to get into the Majestic Theater. She’ll be smitten by the gesture, guaranteed.
After the show, you can take a ride to Central Park and enjoy a glass of wine at the Loeb Boathouse. Finish the day with a sunset gondola ride (or a rowboat – for the boisterous among us) and, perhaps, even that very special hot first kiss.
