The opening scene of
HIT & RUN sets the tone for the rest of the film:
Dax Shepard and
Kristin Bell snuggle under a blanket, exchanging a playful banter and competing in a battle of wits. This first moment epitomizes the mood of the film, which shines through every scene between the two leads. The intimacy between the off-screen couple never falters and it is missed when they are not on the screen. HIT & RUN opens
August 24.
Dax Shepard has managed to add a fresh kind of humor to the action/rom-com genre. His witty dialogue, though at times a little much, comes as a surprise in such an action-packed film and moves the plot in unexpected directions.
In a film where an ex-bank robber falls in love with a non-violent conflict resolution expert, irony and odd juxtaposition play lead roles in every scene. Namely, the lovers’ quarrels in the middle of high-speed chase scenes are absolutely priceless.
Bradley Cooper‘s presence in the film is also invaluable, especially in his scenes with Shepard. The two actors are very similar in their pursuit of pushing every comedic moment to their limits. In this way, the movie is one of extremes, though still anchored by Shepard’s very realistic language.
The audience is never really sure of where the characters will go next; whether a gun will be shot or a verbal debate over political correctness will ensue is anyone’s guess. The audience is constantly kept on its toes.
Finally, the various cameos are a great addition: Kristin Chenoweth is enchanting and Sean Hayes’ appearance will make you want to stay until the very end.
