Television personalities Dr. Oz and Montel Williams were joined at Radio City Music Hall by a panel of leading experts in the fields of health and self help for the Health & Happiness Summit. The free admission event hoped to guide the 6,000 attendees on the road to inner growth, mental strength and physical well being.
The Health and Happiness Summit with Dr. Oz featured health experts, best-selling authors and TV personalities. They joined Dr. Mehmet Oz, who hosts his own Daytime Emmy award-winning program and is one of the most well-known cardiac surgeons currently practicing in the United States, for an afternoon focused on the simple steps you can take to live a healthier, happier, and ultimately, more fulfilling life.
The event kicked off with Dr. Oz sitting on an airplane’s cockpit as he
prepared to take attendees on a ride destined to change their lives. This was a meeting-of-the-minds with today’s most influential wellness
experts discussing the main health issues that Americans are struggling
with today. Each of these experts provided simple solutions to
achieve a healthier, happier life.
The ‘captain,’ Dr. Oz, is a two-time Daytime Emmy Award-winning host of The Dr. Oz Show and vice-chair and professor of
surgery at Columbia University. He directs the Cardiovascular
Institute and Complementary Medicine Program at New York Presbyterian
Hospital. His research interests include heart replacement surgery,
minimally invasive cardiac surgery, complementary medicine, and health
care policy. Dr. Oz has authored more than 400 original publications, book
chapters, and medical books, has received several patents, and performs
more than 100 heart surgeries each year. Previously, Dr. Oz was a
featured health expert on The Oprah Winfrey Show for more than five
seasons.
One of most anticipated speakers of the afternoon was Montel Williams. Though Williams is best known as the Emmy Award-winning host of The Montel Williams Show, he is also a decorated formal naval intelligence officer, an entrepreneur, an actor, a motivational speaker, and a philanthropist. He is the author of The New York Times best-selling memoirs Climbing Higher and Mountain, Get Out of My Way, and the coauthor of Bodychange, a New York Times best-selling fitness book.
In 1999, Williams was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS), and he saw it as an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others affected by MS. Before the end of the next year, he created the Montel Williams MS Foundation to raise funds for MS research. Though he also advocates for animal rights, speaks out for teen empowerment, and has supported veterans’ causes and anti-drug initiatives, Williams remains committed to raising awareness, raising funds for research, and providing inspiration to those with MS.
Another speaker was Rovenia “Dr. Ro” Brock, Ph.D., an award-winning health journalist, television personality, nutritionist, author, and expert on diet, fitness, and health for women and families. One of the country’s leading nutrition coaches for more than 20 years, Dr. Ro was recently named by More magazine as one of America’s top five nutritionists, and has become the go-to nutrition coach for real people and celebrities nationwide. Helping others break bad health habits is one of her greatest passions, and her concerns about childhood obesity have led her to create the DVD series Dr. Ro’s Fit Kidz to teach children easy and fun ways to eat healthy and stay fit.
Also speaking was Lisa Oz, Dr. Oz’s wife and a writer, producer, entrepreneur, and a respected authority on the subject of well-being and relationships. She is host of the Lisa Oz Show on XM and Sirius radio, as well as the co-host of the Dr. Oz radio show. In addition to authoring the New York Times bestseller US: Transforming Ourselves and the Relationships that Matter Most, Lisa coauthored five New York Times bestselling books, including the YOU: The Owner’s Manual series. With her husband, Lisa helped found HealthCorps, a peer-mentoring non-profit which delivers a progressive curriculum in nutrition, fitness, and mental resilience to more than 32,000 teens in at-risk communities across the country.
One of the biggest surprises of the event was the arrival of another experienced ‘captain,’ Captain Kirk himself William Shatner. Shatner spoke about the importance of the event and his desire to attend while in New York
