One of the funniest hombres in Hollywood – actor, producer, comedian – Jim Carrey brings on the magic in the irreverent comedy THE INCREDIBLE BURT WONDERSTONE opening on March 15. After a memorable appearance at Elton John’s Aids Foundation Party a couple of weeks ago, the owner of two Golden Globe Awards now surprises us once again with an outlandish extravagant character.
From ‘In Living Color,’ to ‘The Mask’ to ‘Dumb and Dumber;’ to ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas,’ and much more, Jim Carrey has done it all. Playing characters with a wide physical range, but who always at the core have a deep emotional center.
In an HOMBRE exclusive interview Carrey opens up about his latest role as magician Steve Gray in ‘The Incredible Burt Wonderstone.’
HOMBRE: You play Steve Grey – a very charismatic guy. Tell us about him.
Jim Carrey: Steve is really fun because he is an outsider like “mua” and his name says it all. Steve Grey is a brain rapist, head-tripper, mind-gripper, soul stripper, water sipper, hedge-clipper. He does all that.
H. What kind of relationship does your character have with Steve Carrel’s – Burt Wonderstone?
JC: Burt is a hack, total hack. He is desperate, crowd pleasing, appeasing, pandering even at times and he is on my way and must be stopped. It really isn’t that I dislike him so much, is that he exists in the area that I want to be standing. And I would never let him know that because I have to make him believe that what he has is worthless – that’s really important for my character -is to really drive home the idea and the notion that everything you do is without purpose or meaning.
H: How was it doing the stunts?
JC: I do all my own stunts. There was one time where I laid down on the ground and it was me. It’s weird. I have an odd body language that cannot really be repeated by other people for some reason. I have a turtle shape type of jutting neck, very kind of spastic leg movement and it’s pretty easy to see when it’s a stunt double involved . So a lot of thing you see me doing physical are actual me.
H. What made you want to be part of this movie?
JC: I’m a big Steve Carell fan so when he called me and I needed a job anyway I said “yea”.(laughing) No, I’ve been following him for the long time, I love what he does and I love Steve Buscemi and James Gandolfini, and Olivia Wilde. Olivia is beautiful, talented, smart and wonderful.
H:Your look has changed in this movie. How was the process of adjusting to the new style?
JC: I put the wig on and everybody freaked out, and I said this isn’t the same guy though. Because a piece of hair can change the character completely. So I put the wig on and said “no this is a Christ complex guy. This is the guy who thinks he is Jesus and has an enormous ego, and that’s what makes him so much better than anyone else. It’s really fun to play.
