History has been made. For the first time ever, the world’s 1.2 billion catholics will have a Hispanic leader. After five rounds, Argentina’s Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio earned at least 77 votes, or two thirds of the total, to become the church’s reigning figure. The new pontiff chose the name Francisco I, as a tribute to San Francisco de Asis, a saint who gave up wealth to serve the poor.
Just as his chosen inspiration, the former Cardinal has lived a humble life, taking the bus everyday and residing in a simple apartment. His selection was a seemingly surprise as he did not figure among the names considered to be front runners. However it was only in 2005 when he finished as a runner up in that year’s conclave.
Pope Francisco I becomes the 266th leader of Catholic Church. This is the first time the church elects a
leader outside of Europe and is the only Jesuit Pope in catholic history. He faces many challenges as the catholic church is undergoing a time of crisis. Ongoing scandal and divisiveness within the order are just some of the problems he will face.
But right now it’s a time for joy and celebration.
The new pontiff (born December 17, 1936) is an Argentine cardinal who served as the Archbishop of Buenos Aires. He only has one lung, having lost the other as a teenager. Despite this, he appear fit and strong and in 2001 Pope John Paul II named him Cardinal. The new Pope will move to the Papal Apartment after its renovation, but for now he will live in a temporary apartment in Vatican.
With millions watching on television and tens of thousands gathered at St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City at 7:41pm on March 13 the white smoke appeared and bells started ringing, symbolizing that the new leader of Catholic Church was chosen. When the new Pope appeared on the balcony his first words to the crowd were: “First of all, I would say a prayer: Pray for our Bishop Emeritus Benedict XVI … Let us all pray together for him, that the Lord bless him and Our Lady protect him.” Later he added “I will now give my blessing to you and to the whole world, to all men and women of good will.”
Pope Francisco I is going to assume his responsibilities immediately. he starts by praying to the Virgin, that she may protect Rome. As Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said: “The new pontiff might recite the Angelus prayer on Sunday, March 17, and celebrate an installation Mass on March 19.”
