Sofia Vergara, is on a non-stop roll. After launching her clothing line and serving as spokesperson for numerous brands, the Modern Family made the cover of Forbes Magazine and was again nominated for a Golden Globe for her Supporting Role. Vergara is also spokesperson for Comcast’s Xfinity cross platform entertainment experience in Spanish. In an HOMBRE Exclusive, la Colombiana tells all.
The Emmy, Golden Globes and SAG nominated actress currently plays Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on ABC’s hit series “Modern Family.” She is the first and only Latin actress to begin her career on a U.S. Spanish network and successfully cross over to the general market.
In addition to acting, she enjoys being on the other side of the camera; she helped executive produce the Spanish version of “Desperate Housewives.”
Now, in her new role as the face of Comcast, she will spread the word about something else that is groundbreaking (besides her acting career).
As part of XFinity’s offering of Spanish language choices available on TV, On Demand, and online; the company has created an Internet destination with access to hundreds of Spanish-language movies and shows. They are offered free of charge to Comcast Digital customers on the site www.XfinityTV.com/latinoTV Comcast has also more than tripled the number of Latin television choices available On Demand and is including new content from Telemundo, Galavision, TelaFutura and mun2.
HOMBRE had the opportunity to speak with Vergara and get the inside scoop on the newest form of entertainment designed to meet the interests of Latinos.
H: How did you get involved with Comcast?
SV: I thought it was a very nice campaign to be a part of, with Comcast wanting to reach the Spanish market. They’re providing entertainment in Spanish, which is amazing. Viewers get to pick from more than 700 titles On Demand; Spanish movies, TV shows, it’s fantastic. It’s definitely something I can relate to as a Latin woman and mother.

H: How do you think internet is changing the way people watch television?
SV: Because of the times, people are not able to run home anymore and watch their favorite TV shows. Everyone’s going to school , working, there’s so many things going on in life. Now with the technology they’re able to wait for the right time, when everybody’s home to watch their favorite family show or a movie together. It’s helping people come together again to be entertained together.
H: Do you think that watching shows on the Internet will ever be more popular than regular television?
SV: Well, for me it is because I’m usually not at home. I’m always on the set or on the train or at the airport. Now I get to watch my favorite shows while Im there, so for me it’s definitely getting more popular.
H: Do you have any favorite shows that are going to be featured on Xfinity?
SV: I have many favorite shows! I love comedies, which they have a lot of. They’re also going to have a lot of family shows and movies, which is great.
H: You transitioned from a U.S. Spanish network to the mainstream; you’re a perfect spokesperson for Xfinity. What were some obstacles you had to overcome in crossing over?
SV: It’s just that they don’t always write scripts thinking too much about a Latin character or a Spanish character with an accent, so you don’t get the same opportunities as English speaking actors. But I can’t complain because I was lucky to be cast in “Modern Family”.
H: How did you land your role on “Modern Family”?
SV: I’d been dealing with ABC for four years, and they were trying to place me in the perfect type of sitcom so they sent me the script for “Modern Family.” I thought it was great and the perfect role for me, so they sent me the script and I did it. But I never thought the character would be so accepted the way Gloria has been.
H: You were recently nominated for a Golden Globe; you must be really excited about that!
SV: Yes it’s amazing! I never thought that I would be nominated or win anything , so for me it was a great surprise… I think [this is] the best time in my career, so I’m taking advantage of it.
H: In addition to your acting, you also executive produced the Spanish version of “Desperate Housewives.” Is producing something you’d like to do more of in the future?
SV: Eventually I’m trying to do that. I like that I don’t have to be in front of the camera all the time. Hopefully it will become a big part of my business.
H: You’ve done some really amazing things throughout your career; what is some advice you’d give to those aspiring to break into the American mainstream market?
SV: Don’t take things personal. In this business you have to go to a lot of auditions and be in front of people you don’t know, and it’s hard. Sometimes it’s just that you’re not what the director or producer had in mind. Just forget about it and prepare for the next role.
