New York Will SLEEP NO MORE

06 Nov 2013 by Inna Braginsky in Theater

It’s almost impossible to surprise New Yorkers when it comes to entertainment. They have seen it all. However, we can safely say that the most sophisticated audience will be impressed with Punchdrunk Theater Company’s latest production: Sleep No More.

More than 10 years ago London’s Punchdrunk came up with an idea to create a show where there is no barrier between the audience and the theatrical action. ‘Sleep No More’ is based on the classic William Shakespeare’s tragedy “Macbeth,” but be aware that as any modern work it may differ from the original.

Located on 27th street, the theater is hosted at the McKittrick Hotel which has its own 70 year history. Two years ago the five floor hotel was renovated specifically for ‘Sleep No More’ and now there aren’t any regular guest rooms – instead, you’ll be stopping by a doctor’s office, a ballroom, a cemetery and many other featured rooms.

So here you are – in front of McKittrick Hotel waiting in the line to get in. Keep your jackets but be advised to turn in any bags you’re carrying to feel comfortable and move around. Wear comfortable shoes since you’ll be going up and down stairs.

While waiting for the show to start you are welcome to get some drinks at the bar and chat with dressed up sexy waiters. The bar’s ambiance evokes a 40’s feel, be prepared to listen to fantastic jazz and at some point you will be ushered in …and sleep no more.

Make sure to follow the rules. Guests are supposed to wear white masks, which they keep after the performance as a souvenir from a wonderful evening. All guests are allowed to move freely in any direction, discover different rooms and interact with the actors. The last and the most important part – No Talking! During the entire show the guests as well as the actors are to keep silence no matter what. Since there are no monologues, dialogs or any other conversations ‘Sleep No More’ involves lots of music, dances and body language. Honestly you wouldn’t even notice the lack of words but will be amazed by actor’s grace and sensuality.

Whether you come with a group or as a couple, you’re encouraged to separate and go through the entire experience individually. At the end you will have fun discussing what you saw and it’s very likely that your stories will be completely different.

Each guest can leave the show whenever he or she wants. You have a chance to take your time at the bar and get back to the heart of action when you’re ready – after putting the mask back on. Of course we are not going to reveal the secrets from the experience, suffice it to say that as you make it to the very end you will be part of an extremely memorable adventure.

‘Sleep No More’ is truly a show that has nothing in common with anything else you have ever seen. It’s a great way to celebrate an anniversary, birthday or just a fun weekend.  Tickets are $75 – $95 with performances Mondays to Saturdays. If you want to amaze your friends or a significant other and spend time as you have never done before ‘Sleep No More’ is what you’re looking for.
