The name The Three Hens conjures up images of farm
fresh, naturally sourced ingredients, and home style cooking; and that is
exactly what you find in this newly reopened restaurant in Manhattan’s Kips Bay
neighborhood. The warm and quaint spot lives up to the name by
serving up American cuisine with creative cocktails and an extensive wine list.
On a recent visit we had the opportunity to meet general manager Patty
Gallagher who has reinvigorated restauranteur Shiva Natarajan’s latest
creation with a new vision and bustling
energy. After undergoing changes on its menu The Three Hens is now on solid
footing and pleasing the locals who make it their favorite spot for casual lunches or after work
dining.
The menu, designed by Chef Colin Kruzic relies on the
premise of creating tasty comfort food using the freshest ingredients from
nearby farms. Free-range chicken, prime quality meats, organic eggs and
seasonal seafood and vegetables are all essential.
We start our dining experience with the restaurant’s
signature drinks; the Weeping Willow is made with Koval honey chrysanthemum
liqueur, Calvados, Jack Daniels, orange juice, and aromatic bitters; and El
Aviador made with Silver tequila, crème de violet, June elderflower, and lemon
juice.
Now it’s time to kick things into high gear with delicious
appetizers. The Kobe Beef Sliders are a great introduction but few things
compare to the mouthwatering, finger licking Lamb Ribs served with sweet and
spicy lamb glaze, saffron rice and cilantro. Forget babyback or beef, these
have to be the best ribs I’ve ever had! Yes, and even my dinner guest – a model
– was licking her fingers, craving for more!
What comes next is a house specialty; the Crispy 5
Minute Egg Salad served with frisee salad, asparagus, bacon and bacon
vinaigrette.
Now it’s time for the main course. She orders the Seared Scallops
served with fuji apple, bacon, celery root puree and sundried tomato
vinaigrette, while I choose the Pan Seared Cod served with fennel and
cumin mango chutney.
Both selections are succulent, served in a visually
pleasant presentation and just filling enough. Other house specialties include the Colorado
Lamb served with fried egg plant, sautéed spinach and red pepper coulis; and the
Mushroom Ravioli served with sage butter and parmesan. As expected there are
several chicken dishes on the menu and the Free Range Chicken Pot Pie with
seasonal vegetables is a guaranteed winner.
At The Three Hens you feel like the ingredients came
straight from the farm at the back of the restaurant directly to your
plate. This is truly good food served
in a warm environment free of pretense and unnecessary formalities. The décor
is modern and relaxed with touches of country living like the raw wood tables, the plants
and trees throughout the space, and the grass covering one of the walls. The large windows
create an open feel yet the restaurant remains cozy incorporating contemporary sleek
designs with vintage inspired accents.
When you’re hungry and ready for a delicious, satisfying, no-nonsense meal in Manhattan make your next stop The Three Hens and have a dining experience to remember.
