YES! Javier Bardem has been nominated for a Best Actor Academy Award for his role in Biutiful!! He joins Jesse Eisenberg for The Social Network; Colin Firth for The King’s Speech, James Franco for 127 Hours and Jeff Bridges for True Grit. Read on for more and a Complete list of Nominees: 

After being ignored by the Golden Globes and most other Award shows, Julia Roberts’ campaign to get the Academy to notice his brilliant work in ‘Biutiful’ has paid off. And to top things off he just became first time dad to a son with Penelope Cruz.

Bardem’s performance in Alejandro Gonzales Inarittu’s “Biutiful” was remarkable the difficulty has been in getting to see his work as the film is a small independent feature and more difficult for Academy voters, it’s in Spanish.

Upon learning of the nomination he said: “I am truly honored for this nomination. And deeply thankful to the academy members for their trust and support. Also to all of those who showed their support to my work in ‘Biutiful’ I express my heartfelt gratitude. I am very happy for Alejandro and everyone who has made possible the special movie we made together. It’s really a huge honor to have been nominated in a non-English-speaking performance, and in the name of all my colleagues in Spain I want to show my gratitude to the Academy for support and recognition in this nomination for the movie ‘Biutiful.’ “

This is Bardem’s third Oscar nomination.  Previously he won the Best Supporting Actor for ‘No Country for Old Men.’

Inarittu’s deeply moving Spanish/Mexican production of ‘Biutiful’ was also nominated as Best Foreign Film.

The British film The King’s Speech leads the nominations for the Academy Awards with 12 nominations followed by the Coen brothers’ western True Grit with 10.
