Food scraps and yard waste together make up more than 30 percent of what Americans trash, according to the EPA. In honor of Earth Day, and thanks to Pernod Ricard, the leading spirits company behind Jameson, Absolut, Malibu, and others – along with National Mixologist, Jane Danger – we bring you 4 ways to address the waste issue… even while drinking.
The brand also has a sustainability commitment to 100% of its packaging being recyclable, reusable, compostable or bio-based by 2025.
1. Make a flavored syrup –
Citrus peels, flower petals, fruit pieces can soak overnight to create a delicious Oleo saccharum, something bartenders have been using since the early 19th Century to add aroma and flavor to drinks. Simply place the peels in a bowl, sprinkle granulated sugar on top, muddle and let it sit for a few hours. The sugar will extract the oils from the peels, strain and you’ll be left with a delicious addition to future cocktails.
2. Dehydrate Your Garnishes –
Dried flowers and fruits have become a growing trend over the past few years and creating that refined look is easy. Just toss unused cut citrus in a dehydrator (many air fryers have this option now) for tomorrow’s garnish – the components will last longer and create a photo-worthy moment.
3. Grow Your Own Ingredients –
Growing your own fresh herbs, fruit trees and vegetables will help cut back on the amount of plastic from the grocery store! It also guarantees a fresher, high-quality taste that honors the drink!
4. Start a Compost System –
Start with fruits and veggies — the skin of a sweet potato, the top of your strawberry. Also tea bags, coffee grounds, eggshells, old flowers can be saved and composted yourself or brought to a community garden for sustainable disposal.
