At long last, diabolical FIFA president Sepp Blatter appears to be on his way out of world soccer, at least for a time. Having been tied to a list of unethical and potentially illegal wrongdoings longer than the list of countries tied to FIFA, Blatter now faces a 90-day provisional suspension, according to BBC Sport. Switzerland’s attorney general has opened criminal proceedings against Blatter, who continues to perform a bizarre verbal dance by which he simultaneously denies any wrongdoing and admits to full knowledge of crooked proceedings.

There is now a long list of candidates vying to replace Blatter as the next FIFA president, arguably the most powerful position in world sports. However, Blatter’s presence still hangs like a dark, dangerous shadow over the sport and the next two or three World Cup events. And because transition is on the horizon and criminal investigations are finally beginning, now seems as good a time as any to examine Blatter as the villain he’s truly been for international sports.

Bwin News took the trouble of contextualizing Blatter’s reign of terror among not just sports figures, but our most sinister fictional characters, against whom Blatter’s utter disregard for morality or democratic process stacks up nicely. So what exactly has Blatter done to earn the company of these esteemed individuals? Well, pretty much everything that a person in charge of a gigantic international sports organization could get into. Blatter’s initial scandals revolved around financial mismanagement, and there are still huge sums of money generated by FIFA and unaccounted for to this date. But Blatter received the most criticism for his handling of the 2018 and 2022 World Cup location decisions. He famously called England a “sore loser” when the country presented legitimate questions about how exactly Russia secured the 2018 World Cup, and his support of Qatar’s bid for the 2022 Cup has been little short of nefarious.

Not only is Qatar so hot during the summer that they’re talking about building air conditioned outdoor stadiums (which is ludicrous) or having the Cup in December, but the country is also strictly homophobic. In response to concerns over this little detail, Blatter recommended gay soccer fans refrain from sexual activities, as quoted by Huffington Post. Regardless of any individual’s stance on homosexuality, it goes without saying that this is an unreasonable response to international outrage.

And now, despite continually denying knowledge of any wrongdoing, Blatter is beginning to admit to World Cup bid corruption in an attempt to cast blame on entire countries and organizations, as opposed to himself. NPR quoted portions of a recent interview in which Blatter reveals that Russia was chosen before the actual vote for the 2018 Cup, as well as that the U.S. was initially supposed to receive the 2022 Cup. These comments don’t just suggest that the bids are rigged. It’s more abiut how the other countries bidding have wasted enormous amounts of time, effort, and money on votes that are already decided.

And the worst aspect of Blatter’s villainy is that it’s likely going to go without consequence. Blatter may be penalized to an extent, but investigations are going to take a long time, and meanwhile the crooked World Cup bids stand. Russia is preparing to host a 2018 Cup that it seems to have secured due entirely to Vladimir Putin’s friendship with Blatter. Qatar – a socially restrictive state that’s been in the news for the death toll of workers building soccer stadiums – is going to host a December World Cup in another seven years.

At the very least, we can rejoice that Blatter doesn’t have the longevity of some of the other villains in his company.
