Univision’s Premios Juventud Announces Nominations

Univision’s highly awaited “Premios Juventud” (PJ/Youth Awards) kicks off a new era announcing the nominees for this year’s show. To celebrate Latin music and culture, #PremiosJuventud features memorable performances with the hottest stars and emerging talent, uniting all through the power of music. Renowned for honoring those individuals making a difference with the Agents of Change award, this year the show will recognize everyday heroes of the pandemic and people leading social change. For the first time, Ana Patricia Gámez, Francisca Lachapel and Borja Voces will host the three-hour live event beginning at 8:00 p.m. ET on Thursday, August 13, preceded by “PJ Takeover,” a one-hour pre-show hosted by Jomari Goyso and Clarissa Molina and the multi-talented artist Amara La Negra, beginning at 7 p.m. ET.
The 17th edition of #PremiosJuventud includes 140 nominees in 28 different categories with J Balvin leading the pack with 12 nominations, followed by Karol G (9), Bad Bunny (8), Anuel AA (7), Daddy Yankee and Manuel Turizo (5), Banda MS, Maluma, and Sebastián Yatra (4). The new and modified categories reflect current global issues, trends in music, fashion, video and social media.
The new music categories are: The New Generation Female and The New Generation Male to recognize new artists who make us dance; Spicy Regional Songs to celebrate the ‘spicy’ lyrics; The Perfect Mix for the best collaboration song; The Quarantune to recognize a song created during quarantine; OMG Collaboration for an unexpected collaboration of artists; and And Featuring for an artist that everyone wants to sing with. The changes in the Digital/Social/Influencer categories include: Together They Fire Up My Feed, which this year will recognize friends and not only couples that appear on each other’s’ feed; #PetGoals, artists that post with their pets; #StayAtHomeConcert to acknowledge the best at home concert; Breaking The Internet, artists who posts pictures to break the internet; and Influencer with a Cause, now with a new name, for an influencer who uses their social media platforms for a cause. In the Music Video category: Video with a Purpose, to recognize a video with the best social message. Under the Fashion category: Nailed It, to award the best and most couture manicure.
#PremiosJuventud 2020 continues to reign as the ultimate platform to celebrate the hottest stars in Latin music, launch emerging artists and honor Agents of Change. This year the audience takes the front seat, as in addition to voting for their favorite artists, they will also be able to honor their community heroes and be part of the first PJ virtual audience. Univision will be bringing back its annual summer youth award show #PremiosJuventud in a different and innovative way, keeping safety top of mind. Given the current circumstances imposed by COVID-19, Univision will follow strict guidelines and restrictions, in full compliance with local authorities and public health recommendations, to implement this year’s show.
The categories and nominees were selected through a partnership with industry experts, including Music (Uforia, Home of Latin Music), for video (recognized choreographers and production professionals), for Digital (Univision.com and Univision Creator Network), and for Fashion (Trendy Group). The eligibility period for artists to be nominated was from October 1, 2019 to April 30, 2020.
