Premier League Soccer’s Biggest Boot Endorsements

We hear a lot about the enormous transfer fees and contracts signed by the world’s biggest soccer stars, but in many cases these players are making as much (or more) money off the field than on it. A single endorsement deal can net an athlete millions of dollars in a given year, and most of the big stars have multiple sponsorship deals. But that much, you already know. What you may not know is who tops the list of the biggest boot endorsement deals in the world’s most renowned pro league.
Here are the top five boot deals for Premier League players.
5. Wayne Rooney – Manchester United
Wayne Rooney is arguably the biggest name in the Premier League and the closest thing English soccer has had to a replacement for David Beckham. He’s no doubt tied to more endorsements than we could easily rattle off and he recently served as the face of Manchester United in a preseason ad promoting the club’s new Chevrolet-sponsored kits.
However, Rooney unsurprisingly also owns one of the larger soccer boot endorsement deals in the world. According to The Richest, Rooney’s deal with Nike amounts to roughly $1.67 million (or roughly £1.02 million) per year. Although, in general Rooney doesn’t have quite the clout of other big names in soccer when it comes to endorsements.
4. Sergio Aguero – Manchester City
Sergio Aguero is becoming the biggest star on arguably the best club (or at least, the defending champion) in the EPL. Per Betfair’s Premier League news section, Aguero is off to a fast start again in 2014, having scored three goals in just his first 186 minutes of league play. This is in addition to a fine 2013-14 campaign and a strong showing for World Cup runner-up Argentina this past summer. It’s no surprise then that he now ranks among the most well-paid players in the world when it comes to boot endorsements. When Aguero signed with Puma back in 2011, Daily Mail reported that the deal was worth £1.25 million a year.
3. Mesut Ozil – Arsenal
Despite the fact that many believe he has underperformed since signing a massive deal to join Arsenal, Mesut Ozil remains one of the more capable creative players in the world. He is also a prominent member of the World Cup champion German national team. Once a partner with Nike, Ozil is now tied to Adidas for a deal that Forbes reported to be $35 million over seven years —or about $5 million (£3.06 million) per season. Specifically, Ozil played a role in promoting the Adidas Predator boots during this past summer’s World Cup.
2. Cesc Fabregas – Chelsea
Cesc Fabregas is one of the more interesting stars in European soccer, simply because he can’t seem to find a home. Only 27 years old, the Spanish midfielder has already starred for Arsenal and Barcelona. Now, he’s in his first season with Arsenal EPL rival Chelsea. Even though his club seems to change every few years, his ability and performance are consistent, which is probably why Puma trusted him enough to set him up with one of the most lucrative boot deals in the world. When the deal was struck back in 2011, The Sun listed it at £16 million for five years —or about £3.2 million a year.
1. Mario Balotelli – Liverpool
Mario Balotelli is best known for two things: being one of the most gifted young strikers on the planet and having a list of controversies that somewhat outshines his performance on the field. Love him or hate him, Liverpool’s new star is one of the most intriguing and polarizing players in the EPL now. That makes him valuable to a sponsor, which is why Puma saw fit to give him a deal that now amounts to the biggest boot endorsement in the Premier League. The aforementioned The Richest article puts the deal at $6.9 million (just over £4.2 million) per year. Interestingly enough, when Puma tried to help Arsenal sign Balotelli this past summer, the effort failed. However, the company endorses him at Liverpool nonetheless!
