After winning two personal Oscars and a total of seven awards for his groundbreaking ‘Gravity,’ Alfonso Cuaron became the first Latino to ever win an Academy Award for Best Director. He also won for Editing and the film won for Cinematography, Original Score, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and Visual Effects.
Upon accepting the directing Award from Angelina Jolie and Sidney Poitier, the Mexico native spoke of his ‘transformative film.’ He shared the award with his son Jonas who was also co-writer, and said of the film’s star Sandra Bullock, “You are Gravity. You are the soul and heart of the film and a wonderful collaborator and one of best people I’ve ever met.” He also thanked his wife, George Clooney for ‘his trust,’ and the ‘wise guys’ of Warner Bros., later correcting himself and saying ‘wise people’ to avoid any misinterpretations. He went on to mention his friends and sometime collaborators, Mexican directors Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu and Guillermo del Toro. The acceptance speech ended in Spanish by thanking his mother, simply saying “Gracias a ti mama, por ti estoy aqui. Te amo.”
Cuaron began to develop ‘Gravity’ in 2010. Starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, the film was released in the fall of 2013 and received ten Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture.
Winning the Academy Award for Original Song were the songwriting husband and wife team of Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson Lopez for ‘Let It Go’ from the film ‘Frozen.’ By winning, Robert Lopez became the youngest – and twelfth person in history – to enter the very exclusive EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) club. The 39 year old Lopez has now also won three Tonys, two Emmys and a Grammy.
