At-Home Dia de los Muertos Celebrations With Hornitos Tequila

While we’re not able to celebrate this year’s version of the Mexican holiday in its typical fashion, it’s important to take time out and celebrate all the wonderful things this cultural holiday represents. It’s about celebrating life, enjoying the experiences we have together and cherishing the memories of our ancestors, all in the name of great tequila, great food and great times.

Because we’re primarily celebrating at home, that means people nationwide are going to be looking for new ways to celebrate and Hornitos Tequila and talented Mexican visual artist Lourdes Villagómez are coming together and taking a shot at giving fans 21+ something to raise a glass to – a Dia de los Muertos Paint and Sip!

THE SIP: Hornitos created the Don Francisco Margarita for the holiday, the perfect cocktail for toasting to Dia de los Muertos and honoring the life of the brand’s shot-taking founder Don Francisco. He certainly wasn’t shy about taking chances to make great tequila – he created Reposado tequila before it was even a word, he revolutionized the agave cooking process and stood up to the Mexican government to set new standards for how tequila is produced. All the more reason to raise a glass in his honor and celebrate Mexican heritage. See below for the recipe:

Don Francisco Margarita:

Preparation: Combine ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice, shake and strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice. Garnish with an orange slice or edible marigold. Optional salt and chili rim for garnish.

To Make Honey Syrup*: Combine equal parts honey and hot water. Stir until honey is fully dissolved. Let cool. Store refrigerated in airtight containing for up to three weeks.

THE PAINT: On November 1, timed for Dia de los Muertos weekend, Hornitos Tequila will launch a Dia de los Muertos Paint and Sip through the brand’s IGTV (@hornitosequila) where Lourdes Villagomez (@lourdes_villagomez) will give a step-by-step tutorial as a way to channel the creative spirit and take a shot at painting a new take on the traditional sugar skulls. Fans can tune into Hornitos’ Instagram all week to learn more about the holiday and also see cocktail tutorials for the Don Francisco Margarita.
