BlackBarn, NoMad’s delightful restaurant across Madison Square Park that serves fresh, delicious farm to table American cuisine, recently hosted a grand reopening. The event also served to celebrate the return of tennis to New York City as the restaurant partnered with the Citi Taste of Tennis Food Truck for the occasion. The select group of invited guests had a chance to enjoy some of the creative dishes prepared by Chef John Doherty.
Citi’s food truck featured signature dishes, including a savory almond tartlet with wild mushrooms, goat cheese, and watercress and a delicious Chicken Milanese sandwich with tomato and pesto aioli for free to everyone that stopped by the food truck.
While the Citi Taste of Tennis Food Truck was parked outside Black Barn, inside it featured an intimate soiree with cocktails and decadent signature bites. In homage to the US Open, Black Barn was also serving their limited edition avocado-based “Volley” cocktail and the “Serve” a tuna tartare dish. The dish duo, both featuring the color green thanks to avocado, are sold separately or together as a combo during the US Open.
The cocktail is $14 and the tuna tartare at $12 if ordered individually or as a “Match” at $21.00
At BlackBarn Restaurant seasonal, rustic fare meets a modern farmhouse atmosphere. The Farm to Table restaurant sources most of ingredients from local farmers allowing it to provide guests with the freshest ingredients that are seasonably available.

Volley Recipe and directions
This cocktail consists of creating a base puree made from avocado, cucumber, basil, lime and jalapeno honey.
This is a step by step process for making this tasty cocktail.
The puree:
- Peel 5 cucumbers and chop them up in to cubes small enough for a blender
- Add 12 0.z of water and blend until smooth.
- Add 1 whole avocado
- And bushel of basil leaves
These ingredients will need to be strained once through a fine strainer.
Jalapeno Honey:
Equal parts Honey and hot water this basic honey simple syrup needs no measuring. How much you make of it is based on how many of these drinks you’re making! Once this is made add 1 Jalapeno without the stem. Blend!
Once again using a strainer for this will clean out the now chunky honey.
