BROOKLYN WOK SHOP: Within tradition, Beyond quality

08 Mar 2012 by Inna Braginsky in Pleasure, Restaurants, Restaurants

It’s difficult to surprise New Yorkers
with Chinese cuisine. However Melissa and Edric Har, owners of Brooklyn Wok
Shop
are ready to bring something different while staying within
traditional Chinese cooking. As Melissa says, “We wanted to break the stereotype and put Chinese food in an
upgraded level. We want our guests to eat what my husband and I were used to
eating at home and at the same time we work on the quality of ingredients.”

Speaking of quality, at Brooklyn Wok Shop you
will eat not only fresh produce but hormone-free and antibiotic-free beef,
chicken and pork as well. The Har husband and wife team officially opened their
place  February 1st and proof of its success is that even on a rainy weeknight it’s filled to capacity; keeping Melissa, main Chef Edric, and
the rest of the staff pretty busy.

Before moving on to the menu – a
couple of words about the place itself. Brooklyn Wok Shop is a casual spot, conducive to chatting with friends, working on your laptop or just stopping to grab some food on the go.

Since the restaurant provides
self-service you will notice the tag “Order Here” right when you
first step inside. The interior design is friendly and cozy, making you feel everything is familiar and organic. No  fancy staff, no over elegance. One of the special touches of design is a collage with real Har family photos. On the opposite wall
are hanged decorative bowls.

Finally here we are – looking through the menu. It’s not too big and as Melissa says, “It’s simple but everything is of the highest quality.” Chinese 2.0 as she calls it. Starting with appetizers, you just can’t skip the delicious Salt
and Pepper Squid
. Having tried the first piece you literally won’t be able to
stop. The little addition making a huge difference is the sweet and spicy
dipping sauce which makes the dish unforgettable.

You will also be satisfied with the Fried Chicken Wings, a combination
of crispy and juicy wings served in cinnamon soy glaze. Make sure you wash your hands before trying because
those wings will make you lick your fingers clean over and over.

No doubt the Roast Pork Bun served with soy and honey glaze on a steamed bun will make all pork lovers happy. There is also an option for the Roasted Chicken Bun.

What is Chinese cuisine without noodle soup?
Brooklyn Wok Shop gives you a choice of Wok Shop House-Made Noodles (egg) or Rice Noodles. Add substance and try the Beef Short Rib Soup which is
full of short rib pieces stewed in aromatic spices, noodles and bok choy.
Having so many ingredients makes this soup truly nourishing so watch out since
there are more options to try.

Of course there
is always somebody who likes it hot! They will be pleased with Spice Curry
Wonton Soup
, served with long beans, the delicate mixture of spices and soft wontons will make them feel energized.

For entrees there is Roast Pork or
Roast Chicken served with a choice of white or brown rice with added
fried egg. Another delicious entree is the Hanger Steak with Chinese Broccoli. Served with a savory
brown sauce, Chinese broccoli and rice with little pieces of meat for a perfect fusion of flavors.

When it comes to dessert there is only one choice. The Egg Tart, a not over sweet custard served in a
French pastry shell that melts in your mouth is all you need to close your meal.

Although Brooklyn Wok Shop recently opened, it already has many fans and loyal customers. The restaurant is now open for Dinner and planning a new Dim Sum Brunch this spring.

For some Manhattanites Brooklyn may seem like a world away. But this
restaurant is right across the bridge and well worth the visit. Trust me, Brooklyn Wok Shop is a local neighborhood spot providing everything that makes diners visit over and over: fresh ingredients, familiar dishes, great taste
and love in every bite. Indeed here is a place where New Yorkers can feel relaxed and completely satisfied with ‘Chinese 2.0.’
