Real Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo has been awarded FIFA’s Balon D’Or 2013, the award for the best player in the world. This the second time that the Portuguese superstar player wins the award after first winning in 2008.
A clearly moved Ronaldo was brought to tears upon accepting the award with his infant son from the legendary Pele. “There are no words to describe this moment. I want to thank all my colleagues and companions at Real Madrid, in the Portuguese team and my family who are here with me.”
Ronaldo topped the rankings beating his rival the Argentinian Leonardo Messi, winner of the last four editions. Frenchman Frank Ribery of Bayern Munich came in third.
Ronaldo has come in second on four previous occasions, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2012, and finished last year with 69 goals, six more than in 2012. In addition to great success with Real Madrid, Ronaldo was also the hero responsible for Portugal qualifying for the World Cup. He scored four goals in the live-or-die play-off against Sweden.
Ronaldo joins other two-time Ballon D’Or winners Germans Franz Beckenbauer (1972 and 1976) and Karl -Heinz Rummenigge (1980 and 1981 ), British Kevin Keegan (1978 and 1979), and Brazilians Ronaldo Nazario (1997 and 2002) and Alfredo Di Stefano (1957 and 1959 ).
