Whether you are Evan Longoria, a professional athlete, or an active professional managing a career, family, and social life, it can all get challenging. In a recent study commissioned by Red Bull, Latinos (40%) responded that they are more likely to take on more responsibility at work if they had more energy during the day, than the general population (33%). We caught up with Longoria to see how he manages it all, keeps his energy up, and focuses on everything he needs to succeed both on and off the field.
Latinos (43%) also stated that they are more inclined to socialize with friends or co-workers than the general population (29%) if they had an extra boost of energy. Additionally, Latinos (31%) said that they would play more with their children than the general population (21%).
Longoria is the three-time All-Star third baseman for the Tampa Bay Rays. Over the course of his career, he has been the recipient of many honors, including the AL Gold Glove award and MLB Rookie of the Year. He is also a husband, father, businessman and community leader.
We all want to succeed in our professional and personal lives, below are some tips from Evan Longoria on finding the right balance and accomplishing more.
HOMBRE: Growing up, were there any other professions you were interested in?
Evan Longoria: I didn’t really have a career in mind while growing up, I thought about being a police officer or fire fighter because I loved my criminal justice classes at Long Beach State University, but outside of that, I didn’t have a particular direction.
H:How do you continue to improve your game?
EL: I work on what I am struggling with to accomplish at the time. It’s cyclical. It rarely all clicks at one time. Tee work is a part of my routine every day. I make sure that whatever I’m doing, I’m putting in all my effort.
H: How do you sustain your energy levels during the baseball season?
EL: I eat, sleep, work out, and take time away from my normal routine to rest when I need to.
H: What is your mindset like during a game, what helps you focus?
EL: I usually don’t need much help focusing once the game begins. A Red Bull for extra support before the game starts, along with the energy that I get from the crowd at the stadium keeps me pretty locked in.
H: You own a restaurant in Tampa, Ducky’s. How do you find the time to be a professional baseball player, husband, dad and restaurant owner?
EL: I delegate the restaurant duties to my best friend, Gio, who is the General Manager, and our partners in the business. As for family, my wife is an amazing mother and helps keep things in order so I can focus on baseball during the season. I spend as much time as I can with my kids whether I’m home or away from the field because the days can sometimes get long in baseball.
H: How do you spend your off-season?
EL: I spend the off-season with my family, either on vacation somewhere or in our backyard. My wife and I try and take a trip without the kids every year in order to keep things fresh!
The online survey was conducted by Wakefield Research who surveyed 1,000 U.S. adults, including U.S. Latinos on behalf of Red Bull in March, 2016. For the interviews conducted in this particular study, the chances are 95 in 100 that a survey result does not vary, plus or minus, by more than 3.1 percentage points.
