GEM&BOLT – Elevating The Mezcal Experience

GEM&BOLT is the artisanal mezcal from artist alchemist duo Elliot Coon and AdrinAdrina. The spirit incorporates a distinct distillation with the herb damiana. Damiana has been used for hundreds of years by the Aztecs, Mayans, Zapotecs, and in many other parts of the world. It’s a flowering bush, native to Mexico, with mythological and “heart opening” properties of a higher-frequency spirit. Damiana is believed to endow magical properties in the bedroom, as well as touted for being a natural anti-depressant, overall organ tonic, and mood elevator.
The upstart brand has had various iterations over the years, as the name GEM&BOLT and concept first began as a speakeasy/art-space run by the duo, where the founders curated artful celebrations serving homebrewed mezcal, and thus ignited their love for the spirit, alongside it’s ancient history.
The ancient myth derives in prehistoric Mexico, and as the tale tells a lightning bolt struck an agave, fermenting it and resulting in what is now known today as mezcal. The artist/alchemist duo was so inspired by the cosmic symmetry between the ancient myth and their existing brand name, they were motivated to start their own brand.
Channeling their diversified backgrounds across art, fashion, literature, and design, they created GEM&BOLT, representing much more than a bottle of mezcal, but a brand founded on the mentality that art, plants & celebration elevate consciousness.
The company is committed to working on issues related to ethical supply chain, sustainable agriculture, economic development and other related issues to create a comprehensive corporate responsibility plan. The brand is only created with pure, unadulterated and sustainable ingredients.
GEM&BOLT’s distillation process is done by hand, utilizing traditional methods of roasting and distilling the piñas. The mezcal is produced by a fourth-generation maestro mezcaleros in San Dionisio Ocotepec, using mature (8 to 10 year) Espadín Agave from the high lands of Oaxaca. The harvested agave is slow roasted in conic earth pits and then mashed with a traditional Tahona stone. The team uses only natural fermentation in wooden barrels and once fermented proceed to first distillation in copper stills. There are no artificial yeasts or chemicals used.
The brand’s original team was comprised completely of female, unique in a male-dominated liquor industry. Since then, founders Elliot Coon and Adrin Adrina have been very intentional in bringing in collaborators and partners that align with their higher vision, ethos, and love of life. New partners include Vincent Reyes (Social Entrepreneur and Founder of El Señorio Mezcal), Jody Levy (co-founder WTRMLN WTR and powerhouse business strategist) and CEO Lisa Derman (former Stoli COO).
GEM&BOLT is available nationwide via Reservebar and Drizzly.com, as well as select stores, restaurants, bars, and hotels in California, New York, Texas, New Jersey, Colorado and also in Oaxaca, Tulum, Mexico City, Ibiza, Mykonos, Athens, Berlin and London. A 750 ML bottle retails for around $50.
