The Joyce Theater Foundation (Linda Shelton, Executive Director) is preparing for the opening night performance of Germán Cornejo’s Tango After Dark on Tuesday, February 25 at 7:30pm. The tango World Champion makes his Joyce debut in a celebration of Astor Piazzolla’s music and Argentina’s fiery, most popular dance.

Performances at The Joyce Theater, located at 175 Eighth Avenue, at 19th Street will continue through March 9.

Capturing the bold and seductive rhythms of Buenos Aires, Tango After Dark is an electrifying production that fuses the rich traditions of tango with a contemporary flair. Creator and choreographer Germán Cornejo brings these two worlds together in his inventive choreography, embodying the raw passion and precision that has mesmerized audiences worldwide.

Featuring live music and set to the revolutionary compositions of Astor Piazzolla, Tango After Dark showcases the immense talents of Cornejo, his longtime partner and fellow World Champion Gisela Galeassi, and a cast of eight dancers as they reveal tango in its most authentic, sophisticated form. Setting their fierce, sensual dance in the kaleidoscopic Buenos Aires after sunset, Cornejo and Galeassi make Tango After Dark an unforgettable evening of fiery dance that will keep audiences’ passion for Argentina’s most popular dance burning deep into the night.
Cornejo has been a Principal Dancer with American Ballet Theatre since 2003. His repertoire consists of more than 90 leading roles in classical and contemporary ballets. He has choreographed Tango y Yo for Dance Open Festival, two sunsets for Dancers Against Cancer, Transcendence for the Kings of the Dance Tour, Milongón amigo for the Vail International Dance Festival, Momentum with concert pianist Bruce Levingston for “Trio Concert Dance,” and a tribute to New York to the score of George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” for the debut of his new project DANCELIVE in 2020.

German Cornejo’s “Tango After Dark” Takes Over The Joyce Theater located at 175 Eighth Avenue at 19th Street though March 9, 2025.
