Expect to become very familiar with the name Chrissie Fit this Summer. On Friday May 15th, you can see her in the highly anticipated film “Pitch Perfect 2,” also starring Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Brittany Snow, Hailee Steinfeld, and Elizabeth Banks. Fit plays ‘Flo,’ the first Latina member of the Barden Bellas.
In addition to her role in the “Pitch Perfect” sequel, she will reprise her starring role of “Chee Chee” in Disney’s “Teen Beach Movie 2,” set for release June 26.
Fit started singing at the age of five and always had a flare for the dramatic. She performed in countless plays and musicals throughout her school years, and eventually started working with theatre companies in her hometown of Miami, Florida.
After studying and working in Miami, Fit decided to move to Los Angeles. There she made a name for herself working on numerous television series including “SouthLAnd,” “HOUSE, M.D.,” and in the role of ‘Mercedes’ on “General Hospital.”
Aside from acting, Fit has been working on her writing. Along with friend and writing partner, Cyrina Fiallo, they are now working on a screenplay for producer Barney Cohen, and continue to write for their web series, “The Subpranos.”
HOMBRE: What can you tell us about your character in the “Pitch Perfect 2”?
Chrissie Fit: I play Florencia Fuentes, all the girls call me Flo, and I’m a foreign exchange student from Central or South America, we never say. I’m one of the new Barden Bellas and I bring a new perspective to the group and the comedy’s in that.
H: How was it joining an established cast?
CF: I was very excited when I got the call, and I had to be in Baton Rouge in two days. It was basically pack up your life and be there for three months. I don’t think it set in until that morning when I had to go to dance practice and meet the girls. I was so nervous like the first day of school. But right away they embraced me with open arms. We became fast friends and it was like I was in the first movie and I was just picking up where we left off.
H: What does your character bring to the group?
CF: Because Flo is new and from humble beginnings she brings a different perspective. The girls make a big deal about trivial problems and my character has a different angle and some of the things she says are out there. I think that’s why “Pitch Perfect 2” works so well, because it has comedy that pushed the envelope.
H: How did you prepare for the role?
CF: Well, the audition process was a month and a half. It was singing, dancing, doing the choreography. It was a lot of back and forth. Before that, I did my homework so when I got there I felt I knew what I wanted to do. We had a meeting with Elizabeth Banks who’s incredible. We workshopped everything for a month. By the time we started filming I felt like I knew Flo like she was my sister.
H: Why should audiences see the film?
CF: People should see “Pitch Perfect 2” because it’s so freaking funny. Also because it’s a feel good movie. When you leave the theater you are going to feel empowered.
You’re just going to laugh a lot. And the dancing and the music, they’re all so next level. So good and so fun. If you like having a good time you should go see this movie.
H: What is your next project?
CF: My next project “Teen Beach Movie 2” comes out June 26, right after Pitch Perfect, which is great and so fun and exciting. I’m going to try to be on every sequel of every movie (laughs).
I’m also a writer and we’re finishing up another project with my writing partner Cyrina Fiallo. We’re finishing up a feature project which I’m trying to get going soon. I feel it’s important to create your own content because one day I want to be a producer /director. I want to do it all.
H: Why do you feel that’s important?
CF: It’s important because there’s not that many Latino roles in Hollywood and the more I’m able to write from experience, the better I feel we will be represented on screen and on TV. It’s important to me and also that’s another creative outlet to me. I love to write.
H: Do you want to do more singing, maybe record?
CF: Yes, I feel that’s what the universe is telling me I have to do. The last couple of movies I’ve done have been musicals. Even with the movie I did before, “Filly Brown;” that was really fun. I would sing all the hooks on the songs, although people probably didn’t know it. And now “Pitch Perfect,” I feel like I have to get back into music.
H: What kind of music do you like, or would like to record?
CF: The closest thing that was kind of contemporary was Amy Winehouse. In my house I remember my mom listening to Luis Miguel. I like balladas. I like music that has a soul and you can feel the lyrics that are being sung. That would be really cool, especially because I’m actress and I can relate.
You have to treat music with a lot of attention and respect.
H: Finally, being HOMBRE we need to ask, what is your idea of a perfect date?
CF: I think that something that’s active, like bowling, or hiking, or something where you do something. Because a dinner date, as nice as that is, sometimes I feel like I’m on an interview, especially if I’m meeting you for the first time. Do something fun even, if we go to the batting cages. That would be a better way to get to know each other.
And also to walk me to my car, that’s really important to me. Being a gentleman, opening doors and all that stuff.
H: And finally, what should a man do to romance a woman like you?
CF: Just being yourself and a gentleman. Not talking too much about yourself (laughs). Maybe I’ve been living in L.A. too long (laughs). If a guy has a sense of humor he’s instantly attractive. Or any sort of talent that they’re passionate about. I feel like something outside yourself it’s very important to have.
