“Deadpool” – now playing – dominated Valentine’s Day weekend earning over $300 million worldwide and setting a number of box office records, including the largest gross for an R rated film. According to producer and star Ryan Reynolds, the heart of the film remains costar Morena Baccarin, in the role of Vanessa. We spoke to Baccarin, prior to the film’s opening, to deeper explore the chemistry that drives the romantic soul of this action packed film.
Brazilian born Morena Baccarin made her television debut in the science fiction drama “Firefly” and she reprised her series role of Inara Serra in the 2005 film “Serenity.” In May 2009, Baccarin made her Off-Broadway debut in Theresa Rebeck’s television satire “Our House” at Playwrights Horizons in New York City. That year, Baccarin joined the cast of the Showtime television drama “Homeland,” for which she won acclaim for her performance as the conflicted wife of a former prisoner of war. In 2013, she was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series at the 2013 Primetime Emmy awards for her performance. Her other television credits include “V,” “The O.C.,” “Stargate SG-1,” “Justice League” and “Gotham.”
HOMBRE: What are your feelings about the making of “Deadpool”?
Morena Baccarin: It’s a dream come through. It’s awesome to be excited about shooting something, to read a great script, to see it come to life and to have it be the movie you thought you were making. I think that’s one of the things that doesn’t always happens as an actor. Ryan actually did a ton of quality control. Keeping it true for the fans. To tell a story of this guy and getting an R rating, that was huge.
H: How did you make the chemistry work so well between both of you?
MB: We took a lot drugs (laughter). This a is a true story. I remember Ryan saying to me “Whatever you do Morena, don’t get pregnant or I would punch you in the face (laughter). Then one of the first things I did when I got pregnant was call him and say, “I’m pregnant don’t punch me n the face” (laughter). The chemistry just felt right.
H: What is the message the film sends when she accepts him, even though he has been disfigured?
MB: There’s the world’s greatest line, “That’s a face I’d be happy to sit on,” (laughter). Isn’t that what people say? (laughter). I really think that’s a beautiful message. They’re kindred spirits and I think they can do a lot together. I’m not going to lie to you, looking at that thing was crazy and the first time I saw it I was like ‘I gotta kiss that?’ But that’s what’s beautiful about them. They’re gonna make it.
H: Is that what made it the perfect Valentine’s Day film?
MB: Absolutely. That, and all the great sex montages (laughter). It’s super romantic – she gets taken, he goes after her, she’s pissed at him, and then they get over it.
H: What were your favorites superheroes and villains growing up?
MB: I always liked the Joker as a villain. Why is it much easier for me to name villains than superheroes? Catwoman, she sort of rides the line between villain and superhero in a PG13 kind of way.
H: What’s next for you?
MB: Well, I got to do that (points to pregnant belly and laughs). Once that’s done I’ll probably start shooting “Gotham” again. Mainly I’ve just been trying to get through the week without having a child! (laughs).
