The 2016 NFL Draft is now history. There’s a new crop of young superstars set to dominate the football field in the next few years. As always, HOMBRE is a step ahead, and here we bring you an exclusive conversation with two of next season’s top prospects. Defensive Back Jalen Ramsey from Florida State University – considered by many to be the best defensive player available – was selected as the No. 5 pick overall in the first round by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Overcoming concerns of his knee, Linebacker Myles Jack from UCLA was selected as the No. 36 pick in the second round, also by the Jaguars. Speed Stick organized an event to prepare these future millionaires to face the pressures that await them on and off the field, and to make sure they always remain dry, regardless of the situation.
Colgate-Palmolive’s Men’s Speed Stick for their new campaign chose to feature these two highly-touted rookies in this year’s draft class. Continuing his role as Coach Speedman, veteran actor John C. McGinley stars in the Speedman’s Playbook campaign. The campaign features McGinley’s gruff coach counseling both Ramsey and Jack on their personal brands with the tagline, “Speed Stick: Game On.”
Putting them through the test early on, here’s our exclusive interview.
HOMBRE: Who are some of the players you look up to?
Jalen Ramsey: None. I never had an idol, never had anyone I looked up. I’ve always been my own man, I want to build my own legacy. I don’t really believe in looking up to someone because I’m going to be playing with that person and against that person so why am I going to look up to them. I can always get techniques and skills off of them but I wouldn’t say I looked up to anyone.
Myles Jack: That’s tough because I looked up to lot of guys. Defensively guys like Sean Taylor, Bob Sanders, Donte Whitner, Ray Lewis; defensive kind of people, really physical guys who have a presence defensively.
H: Who influences you outside the football field?
JR: My family, especially my older brother who’s four years older than me. He went though some of the same life things and football things I went through and he went through it four years ahead of me, so I just got to watch him. I don’t know if he knows it or not but he’s been one of my biggest inspirations and biggest influences.
MJ: I would say my mom, she definitely motivates me. Just kind of keeping me going through life. I understand there’s going to be ups and downs but understanding everything in the end will pan out.
H: How do you feel coming up to the draft, and about this experience?
JR: I feel excited and just blessed. Those are two words that sum it all up right there. Everyday I wake up and I’m blessed, and as we get closer the excitement is just building.
MJ: It’s cool to get a little taste of what’s going to happen and see the media through this. I’m really just preparing to get a suit number one, got to look clean; preparing to see who’s going and who’s not going that’s going to be another thing. At the end of the day this is a once in a lifetime experience and I’m excited.
H: Which are your favorite teams?
JR: The Cowboys were my all time favorite team and my second favorite were the Titans since that’s where I’m from. My whole family loves them and I went to their games. I’ll be excited no matter where I go, that’s my dream come true. I’m going to get the positive off any situation. I’m that type of dude. No matter where I go I’ll be so happy. I’ll be blessed.
MJ: I like all teams, any one that wants to draft me. Growing up in Georgia I definitely followed the Falcons when they had Mike Vick. Then when I was in Seattle the Seahawks are good so I got to see them. But I was really a Rams fan.
H: Jalen, what will you purchase, or how will you celebrate once signed?
JR: I’m not really sure, but me and my financial adviser have planned out stuff. I definitely want to show appreciation to all the people that supported me and helped me get to where I am now. My support system, my family and everyone that supports me.
H: When did you get a financial adviser?
JR: That’s how it goes nowadays. Being 21 years old and about to be a young millionaire I need a financial adviser. I need someone to help me get my budget right, get how I’m going to spend my money, that’s just the wise and the smart thing to do. Get someone who’s been in the business, who has some knowledge on that to help me out.
H: Myles, you seem like a real connoisseur of the game of football.
MJ: I could watch football all day, my TV is always on ESPN and NFL network, I just like watching the game. It’s an interesting game for me.
H: Who are your favorite artists musically?
JR: Kendrick Lamar, guess because I have an old soul and everyone says he’s kind of like Tupac, and I really love Tupac but I didn’t grow up in his time, also J Cole. I’m a hip-hop, rap, R&B type guy.
MJ: Depends on what I’m feeling because I may go slow with an R&B act like PartyNextDoor, or I may go with a slower rap like Wiz Khalifa, or if I’m feeling tough I may put on Gucci Mane. I mix it up a lot.
H: How do you feel about this experience with Speed Stick?
JR: It’s been amazing for me. Being an ambassador of it, me and Myles, being able to come to events like this. My first time in New York City. They gave me this opportunity to be in NYC, the draft is not here anymore, so I get a chance to come here sight-see and enjoy my time.
MJ: Being involved with this is definitely an honor that they chose me as one of the spokespeople. I think it’s a cool deal, working side by side with them, partnering up with them it’s a really good opportunity and I’m very grateful for it. It’s a really cool thing to be a part of.
