Celebrate the nation’s birthday with a few all-American wines from California’s wine county. Whether you’re bringing it to the neighborhood BBQ or hosting your own party, be sure to add a bottle that’s red, white, or (Rombauer) blue.
Besides the upcoming July 4th celebrations, there are innovative ways to enjoy summer that incorporate the tropical touch of mango into fish or salad dishes this season. The wines below are the perfect choice to complement mango appetizers and are available at an approachable price point for summer entertaining.
Louis M Martini 2019 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (SRP $55): This red from Louis M. Martini exemplifies why the winery is known for producing premier Cabernet Sauvignon. This particular Napa Valley Cab presents a blend of cassis, vanilla, and smoky cedar aromas, layered with notes of black licorice and spice. It’s a top option for a wide variety of palates, so it will be a patriotic hit this July 4.
Pair it with a grilled steak or a juicy burger seasoned with zesty, smoky flavors.
J Vineyards Cuvée 20 (SRP $40): This (sparkling) white wine comes from the renowned Russian River Valley and displays notes of apple and cranberry with a soft palate of lemon meringue pie flavors.
It’s a nice, crisp sparkler to sip on its own during the firework show, or you can pair this with grilled salmon for a patriotic al fresco meal.
Rombauer Vineyards 2022 Sauvignon Blanc (SRP $28): You can join Rombauer’s mission of spreading the joy of wine by sharing this Sauvignon Blanc with friends and family this Fourth of July. Its recognizable blue cap is on theme for any July 4 gathering, and its grapefruit and lychee aromas make this the perfect crisp sip for a daytime soiree.
Pair this with the All-American Chicken Salad sandwich from Irma Rombauer’s Joy of Cooking cookbook.
Mango Shrimp Ceviche and Chardonnay:
Hahn Family Wines strives to create world-class wines such as the 2022 California Chardonnay ($15.99). Originating from the cool climate of Monterey Country, this wine boasts generous aromas of citrus and tropical fruit with an acidity that pairs well with the bright flavors of a mango and shrimp ceviche.
Mango Salsa Salmon and Chardonnay:
Franciscan wines such as the 2022 California Chardonnay ($15.99) are known for sips that let the fruit speak for itself. This is a white that offers layers of peach and honey ending in clean finish. The refreshing flavors of lemon zest and white flower can be enjoyed with a citrus-dressed salmon and a fresh mango salsa for a light meal to balance the summer heat.
Mango-Dressed Nicoise Salad and Sauvignon Blanc:
William Hill Estate has been producing extraordinary, fruit-driven wines such as the 2022 California Sauvignon Blanc (SRP: $14.99) for over 40 years. This wine is unoaked, giving it a vibrant and fruit-driven profile with notes of green apple and citrus. Each sip is packed with bright tropical fruit flavors that pair beautifully with a fresh nicoise salad and a sweet mango dressing.
