SAILOR JERRY Rum for the Last Days of Summer
06 Aug 2014 by Javier Restrepo in Home, Pleasure, Spirits
As our Summer days drift away, Sailor Jerry Rum has created some inspired cocktails to make the most of the season. The spiced rum traces its heritage to the iconic Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins, known as the father of tattooing and rock and roll subculture. Born in 1911, Collins was a tough old Navy sea dog who set up his famous tattoo shop in Honolulu in the 1930’s. Over the next 40 years, he carved out a unique style that would change the face of tattooing forever. Perfecting a deftly-crafted, boldly-lined style that incorporated both American designs and traditions with Asiatic coloring and sensibilities, the iconic “Sailor Jerry” tattoo has become one of the most recognizable icons of Americana, representing a unique attitude and spirit of rebellion. Collins also revolutionized the industry by advocating for regulated standards of sterilization and sanitation that established the levels of cleanliness expected in modern day tattoo shops.
Sailor Jerry is a straight-up, no-nonsense rum. The spirit is crafted from a selection of rums distilled in the Caribbean. Master blenders “marry” the rums to a exacting recipe, and then infuse it with one-of-kind mix of spices and other natural flavors, most notably vanilla and a touch of cinnamon. The result is high-quality, old-school spiced rum that goes down smooth, but at 92 proof it is sure to put hair on any man’s chest. The 750ml bottle retails for around $17.50.
Nose:
Intense vanilla, dry buttery toffee and subtle cinnamon notes
Taste:
Warm spices of cinnamon & nutmeg with rich vanilla. A long dry finish balanced with a subdued sweetness and a hint of burnt toffee
Smoothness is the key to Sailor Jerry’s versatility. Enjoy it how you like it — straight, mixed or in a cocktail.
