After a memorable performance in Brazil’s FIFA World Cup, President Barack Obama phoned members of the U.S. National Soccer Team to offer congratulations and invite the team to the White House. “You guys all did us proud,” Obama said in a phone call to U.S. team captain Clint Dempsey and goalkeeper Tim Howard, adding “You guys captured the hearts and imaginations of the whole country, it was unbelievable.”
Over 22 million people in the U.S. watched the U.S.-Belgium game on Tuesday surpassing the number of viewers who tuned in to see the Boston Red Sox win the baseball World Series last year.
Team USA‘s midfielder Alejandro Bedoya celebrated the hard work of his teammates by gifting each of them with an engraved bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue Label – a rare blend crafted to toast epic milestones. The Scotch whisky’s reputation as a symbol of personal progress around the world with its Keep Walking mantra inspired the athlete to toast his teammates and the potential that lies ahead as they return home from Brazil.
“I wanted to do something to commemorate the occasion, because win or lose, making it to the World Cup is an epic achievement. We can’t change the past, but we can take a moment to reflect on this experience and use it to drive us forward. What we decide to do next, whether it’s on or off the playing field, that’s where all of our potential lies. I am inspired to keep walking down the road ahead.”
