As the saying goes, ‘It’s bigger in Texas!,’ which makes it the ideal state in which to preview Nissan’s biggest vehicle to date: the Titan XD. The automaker has taken over the State Fair of Texas with a large footprint dedicated to the launch. The most powerful truck in Nissan’s arsenal will be in full display in the long running consumer event – the country’s biggest state fair – set to attract over 2 million visitors throughout its 24 day run.
We at HOMBRE attended the event and witnessed Fred Diaz, senior vice president, Nissan Sales & Marketing and Operations U.S., Nissan North America, Inc., unveil the next iteration of the all the new pick up truck. The Titan XD was first introduced to huge acclaim in January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Now the wait is almost over as consumers taking in the Fair can step inside the vehicle before it arrives at dealers in December.
In order to properly introduce consumers to the new Titan XD, Nissan coordinated a massive activation at the Fair to properly demonstrate the vehicle’s force and durability. The site had three Nissan Titan XD’s situated across a track for consumers to experience. There was a broken road obstacle where consumers had to traverse broken platforms, symbolizing the Titan’s durability in handling rough terrain. There was a slingshot, blasting Nissan staff in the air, exemplifying the force of the Titan’s torque. Nissan also set-up a large-scale obstacle course arranging for past contestants of NBC’s “Ninja Warrior” and local athletes to take on the challenge and prove they were ‘Titan Tough.”
The 2016 Nissan Titan XD is the first in a lineup of Titan trucks that will be offered in multiple cab configurations, powered by Cummins Diesel and Nissan gasoline engines, with the first truck being available for purchase in December 2015. The Titan XD features a 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel engine, beefier suspension, heavy-duty brakes, and a redesigned, premium interior. The truck is American-made: designed in California, engineered in Michigan, tested in Arizona, assembled in Mississippi, and powered in Indiana and Tennessee.
Taking a closer look at the 2016 Titan XD, these are some of the details that set the powerful truck apart from the competition:
Engine
The Titan XD’s engine delivers 310 HP with 555 LB-FT of torque. The all-new Cummins 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel engine brings heavy-duty attitude and torque to half-ton pickup territory, and does it while delivering fuel economy.
Towing
A half-ton engine creates enormous towing power, with commercial grade components and stability provided by a gooseneck hitch. In early trials the XD pulled more than 6 tons with total confidence.
With the Titan’s unique technology, in one step it can help you ensure all lights are functioning before hitting the road. Three clicks of the Nissan Intelligent Key initiate a sequence that helps check the turn, brake and running lights.
Chasis
To improve handling and ride comfort, the Titan XD has a new heavy-duty suspension. The double wishbone front suspension was reinforced and tuned, and the back end is more rigid thanks to bigger leaf springs and overhauled leaf bushings.
Aisin 6-Speed Transmission
To handle the raw power pounding out of the Cummins 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel engine, the Titan XD is backed with a heavy-duty 6-speed Aisin automatic transmission.
New Transfer Case
The Titan XD has a rugged new transfer case on to ensure maximum power distribution in every gear. It pushes torque to both axles, and gives four-wheel drive whenever added traction is needed on snow, ice, sand, mud, muck, dirt, water, or gravel.
Interior
As expected, the Titan’s XD interior is large and comfortable. The shifter has been relocated to the steering column, making more room for a massive center console and for more overall space in an already spacious interior.
Carefully considered storage features and power sources are placed throughout the cabin. There is advanced connective technology, while supportive, leather-appointed front seats provide exceptional long-haul comfort.
Cargo Bed
The new 2016 Titan XD lineup boasts a cargo box loaded with available features. The innovative Utili-track cargo system features four heavy-duty aluminum alloy cleats that move and lock anywhere along the walls, bed floor and header tracks to give you endless tie-down possibilities. Lockable in-bed storage sits sight-unseen at street level, and flush-mounted LED lighting helps you find that rogue socket wrench in the dark.
