The Knickerbocker sits at the ‘crossroads of the world’ – right at the intersection of 42nd Street and Broadway – and as surprising as it seems, this can be your oasis of peace and sophistication in the middle of the neon jungle that is Times Square. Built in 1906 by John Jacob Astor IV, the property retains the architecture of a bygone era, a time when the standard dress code for a man was a suit, tie, and fedora. Current fashions may have changed, but it’s refreshing to know that the majestic grand exterior is complemented by unsurpassed service and an interior decor of elegantly appointed suites, with all the top amenities expected from a superior hotel.
It’s no wonder then that Travel & Leisure ranked The Knickerbocker as #5 among The Best City Hotels in the Continental U.S. and #92 among The 100 Best Hotels in the World. During our recent stay we witnessed first hand all the highlights that have garnered the property such an impressive list of accolades.
The rebirth of a classic began in February 2016 when the 16 story Beaux-Art hotel reopened its doors after a $250 million makeover. Now The Knickerbocker boast a Charlie Palmer haute cuisine restaurant, one of the best rooftop bars in the city, and superior service to support outstanding accommodations.
Guestrooms
The property has 330 guestrooms including 27 Junior Suites and 4 Tribute Suites—the Caruso, Cohan, Martini and Parrish. All accommodations boast a sleek and contemporary style, soaring 12-foot ceilings, 8-foot doors and 6-foot windows creating an indulgent sense of space. Bespoke furnishings, oak wood finishes, richly textured fabrics, and intelligent lighting. You’re bound to get a good night sleep with the plush Stearns & Foster Euro-top beds piled high with luxurious SFERRA linens and Ploh feather pillows. All the comforts of a fine home will be at their fingertips, from state-of-the-art technologies to bath amenities from Ted Gibson, a stylist to stars such as Angelina Jolie, making his first hotel collaboration.
Although you’re in the center of all the action in New York – and probably the busiest, loudest intersection – when you step inside your guestroom you would never know it. Designers must have spent a hefty portion of the budget soundproofing the interiors. Once in the comfort of your suite you will be lost in a sea of tranquility and peace, forgetting you’re in Times Square.
Rooftop
One of the main highlights of a stay at the The Knickerbocker is the rooftop bar St Cloud. With its three plush corner Sky Pods overlooking Times Square, stylish indoor and outdoor seating options, the exclusive Waterford Crystal Lounge, an ultra-luxe private room, and lush living walls of greenery, this is the quintessential New York spot. Named for the late-19th century hotel that originally occupied the site, St. Cloud is the pinnacle of luxury.
The venue has music, a Club Macanudo Cigar Lounge, and a progressive cocktail menu, craft bottled beers and an upscale, seasonally focused small plates menu.
Oh, and if you ever decide to have the once in a lifetime experience and watch the ball drop on New Year’s Eve, there is no better place to be.
