The Lodge at Pico Bonito, a Small Luxury Hotels of the World, nestled at the base of the Pico Bonito National Park in Honduras is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts seeking birding, hiking, whitewater rafting and other activities.

Set on the edge of Honduras’ second largest National Park and ten miles from La Ceiba, the property – together with Pico Bonito National Park and Cuero y Salado Manatee Refuge – encompass seven distinct ecosystems, each with their own resident and migrant bird species.

The resort has 22 private and superior cabins, approximately 400 square feet in size. The eco-lodge will introduce a new 3,675 square foot spa, which will have three circular cabins on stilts to maintain balance and harmony with the natural energies of the environment.

In November 2016, The Lodge at Pico Bonito will be the setting for Honduras Birding for Conservation Tour organized by James Adams, the eco-lodge’s resident birder and sponsored by the Honduras Government and United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Research reveals birders represent 20 percent of the U.S. population and they tend to be 50 years or older with a propensity for traveling to see different bird species.

The eco-lodge is an adventure lovers’ playground offering the following activities:

The eco-lodge is home to more than 400 bird species making it an ideal setting for bird watching. Tropical animals such as parrots, parakeets, tanagers, the endangered Honduran emerald hummingbirds and the prized bright-blue feathered lovely cotingas are in no short supply on the property.

The upcoming birding event capitalizes on one of the unique activities at the eco-lodge. Birders will ensemble in teams and participate in a contest to uncover the most tropical birds in three venues. The team that documents the most species will select a recipient of a $20,000 conservation prize in Honduras.

The resort has a six-days/five-nights package for avid and first-time bird watchers to get up close and personal with these tropical beings. The stay includes accommodation, all breakfasts and dinners plus bird watching trips to the Pico Bonito National Park, Rio Santiago, mangroves and lagoons of Cuero y Salado Refuge and a dry forest habit.

Price is $2,399 in high season and $1,979 in low season based on double occupancy in a Standard Cabin.

Hike To Unbelievable Falls
Hiking has grown in popularity during the last five years and there are now 32.50 million hikers with an average age of 36 in the U.S. To capitalize on this trend, the eco-lodge encourages physically fit hikers, ages 12 to 65 years old, to test their endurance during a five-hour trek to Unbelievable Falls.

Guides take guests on walks spanning 27,000 acres through the Pico Bonito National Park. Along the way, visitors will see rare tropical birds as well as jaguars, tapirs, deers, pumas, white-faced and spider monkeys.

Upon arrival at Unbelievable Falls, travelers find a double drop waterfall descending 100 feet into a swimming hole. The brave at heart can hike up rocks or swim in the pool between the two drops.

The Unbelievable Falls trek cost $40.

Lodge Night

Night Hike
Guided walks enable nature lovers to learn about the nocturnal animals — tree frogs, kinkajous, bats, possums, beetles and moths — roaming freely at night. The two-hour trek begins by setting up a spotlight from the first observation tower to these animals.

Night hikes cost $30 per person.

Ancient Mayan Ruin
Studies show  “78 percent of leisure travelers engage in cultural, also known as historical travel, to experience the place, artifacts and activities to authentically represent the stories of people of the past.” The Lodge at Pico Bonito has a two-night excursion for history lovers to learn about Copán, an UNESCO World Heritage archeological ruin dating back to the ancient Mayan civilization.

Guests will uncover hidden tombs and buildings buried by the Mayans, as well as visit the new Copán Sculpture Museum and other ancient archeological sites.
Price is $650 per person. Breakfast is included in the price based on double occupancy.

Whitewater Rafting
The Rio Cangrejal, a 20-mile river flowing from the within the Rainforest of the Pico Bonito National Park to the Caribbean Ocean, is just 50 minutes away from the eco-lodge making it an ideal one-day excursion.

The Rio Cangrejal has rapids with difficulties ranging from class II to class IV. Whitewater rafting can take place all year long. However, the rapids are the best during the period from September to February.

The new outdoor spa will have one cabin for individual massage, one cabin for couples massage, one cabin with a Vichy shower, one Temazcal (a Maya-style sauna), and a nearby plunge pool. Spa menu will use natural organic ingredients from the surrounding area.

The Lodge at Pico Bonito is accessible from major American gateway airports. Room rates range from $330 to $375 during high season and $225 to $279 during low season. Price includes accommodations, breakfast for two, tour of the lodge’s butterfly farm and serpentarium, and access to the loop of trails.
