Since June 8, the Mexican Caribbean has welcomed tourists from around the world, travelers who have enjoyed its beautiful beaches, parks, cenotes, and experienced the local culture and gastronomy. As a result joint efforts between the state government, the Tourism Board, the private sector and tourism service providers, the doors to tourism have reopened successfully.
The process paid special attention to hygiene measures in order to protect travelers and citizens alike, as health remains the absolute priority. PROTOCOLS FOR TRAVELING SAFELY TO THE MEXICAN CARIBBEAN
For travelers’ peace of mind, below are some of the protocols that have been established in the state to make your trip as safe and pleasant as possible. For more information on specific preventative measures, we recommend that you contact your hotel and/or service provider directly.
At the airport:
• All terminals are 100% compliant with hygiene protocols
• “Social Distance” measures in inter-terminal transportation, elevators, passenger inspection
points, commercial areas, boarding gates, customs and others
• Installation of protective acrylics on counters
• Antibacterial gel dispensers in all public areas
• Temperature control and personal protective equipment for all airport employees
• Constant cleaning and disinfection in all areas
• All passengers must fill out the questionnaire for the identification of risk factors in travelers,
in printed and electronic form
• Temperature sensors (thermos-cameras) have been placed at all passenger arrival and
departure areas
• Constant cleaning and disinfection of all security trays
• Cleaning and disinfection of automobiles, buses and other land transportation
During hotel transport:
• All staff wear personal protective equipment
• Increased cleaning cycles in the units
• No physical contact with operators
• Reduced number of passengers allowed per transfer
At the hotel:
• Social distance measures of 6 feet between each person
• Temperature check with non-contact thermometers
• Baggage will be strictly cleaned at check-in and check-out
• Posters are displayed with information on hand washing technique, correct sneezing, disinfection of personal items; as well as basic symptoms of respiratory diseases
• Disinfectant footwear mats
• Hygiene stations have been set up with soap and water or hand sanitizer
• The staff wears masks and there are available for customers who require them
• Constant monitoring of guests’ and employees’ health status
Mexican Caribbean Clean & Safe Check Certification
In order to provide confidence among travelers, employees and the community, the Ministry of Tourism (SEDETUR) and the State Health Services Department (SESA), along with specialists in the sector, launched the “Mexican Caribbean Clean & Safe Check Certification” (CPPSIT) program which aims to maintain health measures for the prevention and containment of COVID19, while supporting the tourism industry’s adaptation of health practices. This certification aligns with international protocolslike those established by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC).
As of August 13, 6,811 companies, including hotels, transportation companies, tour operators, restaurants and taxis, have registered to obtain the certification and comply with the highest sanitary measures.
“Safe Travels” Stamp – World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC)
Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean became the first destinations in the Americas to receive the “Global Safety Stamp” issued by the WTTC to destinations that adopted its standards for traveler protection. During the reopening process, the destinations of Cozumel, Puerto Morelos, Tulum,
Isla Mujeres and Costa Mujeres have also received the stamp of approval.
The Mexican Caribbean tourism industry has gone above and beyond to maintain the highest hygiene and safety standards, recruiting and working with internationally renowned companies, further proving a commitment to meet the highest hygiene and prevention standards including:
ECOLAB, Sello de Calidad Punto Limpio, Cristal International Standards, Preverisk Group, 3M, Bayer, KEY, among many others.
Traveler with COVID-19 symptoms
Remain calm, there are clear protocols in place and your hotel staff are trained to deal with any potential symptoms. Health authorities (SESA) will be called in and they will carry out the necessary tests to confirm if futher action is needed.
