Leo González is redefining Latin comedy. The social media sensation has gone from viral TikToks on your phone screen to hosting shining moments in some of Award Shows’ most popular red carpets, and soon to your local movie theater with several upcoming film projects.

As the face of Corona‘s very tasty Sunbrew, he’ll be hosting a major launch event for the brand in New York City. We caught up with the accidental stand up comic to discuss upcoming projects, his sudden rise in the world of comedy, and his future plans.

HOMBRE: How does your involvement with Corona come about?
Leo Gonzalez:
Corona is a company that represents me in a lot of ways.
And obviously I’m down for Corona, that’s my brand.

H: What can you tell us about Corona Sunbrew?
LG: It’s getting rolled out nationally now, but it has been available regionally in certain markets.
It’ll be available at sporting events, arenas, concert venues, and retailers. It’s made with orange peels. It has Gen Z feel and I consider myself an adopted Gen Z’er. Gen Z is very creative. They’re fashion forward, they’re flavor forward so this is a drink that makes sense for them.

H: What can we expect at the upcoming NYC event?
LG: It’s gonna be huge. It’s called SunYSpeakeasy, but it’ll be the opposite of what we typically think of a speakeasy to be.  It’ll be in a secret location, but it’s not gonna be this dimly lit, dark corner place. It’s gonna be super vibrant, it’ll have activations, tastings and food.

H: Who can attend?
LG: Fans of Corona that are already in the NY  Tristate and that are chosen from the sweepstakes are gonna be able to pull up. But also one winner that’s not in the area will have the chance to go to that event.
It’s gonna be very orangey limey.
I love that we’ll be able to bring people together that already love Sunbrew so we can try it together, and I love New York.

H: How will it be interacting with your fans?
LG: I’ll be hosting so I’m gonna be walking around, checking out everything like every party that I do.
Maybe say a few things on the microphone, take a few pictures.
Anytime that I can be in NY but especially with Corona is a great time.
I’ll do some interviews too. It’s a lot of what I love to do. I’m in the streets, and I’m in award shows. It’ll be something like that for this drink I love and think people will love the experience.

H: You’ve been hosting a lot more Red Carpet interviews, how is that, to deal with all these celebrities and find out they’re actually fans of your comedy?
LG: That’s crazy.
Maybe I’ll get used to it one day. I can’t get used to it now.
For me it’s an honor and I feel lucky every time I get to go to those things. It’s a dream and everyone is so great.

H: I remember seeing you interview Salma Hayek and she said how much she enjoyed your work.
LG: That was crazy. Obviously I’m a fan and being Latino and a Mexican every time I see someone like Salma I feel like we’re locked in. She’s such a nice person. Leo González  with Salma Hayek at the Golden Globes

H: What’s next for you?
LG: I’m trying to do anything that I’m allowed to. Anything that they’ll allow me to do honestly.
I never thought I’d be doing stand-up. That’s what I’m trying to get better as I continue these dates.
I’ve been doing auditions, I’ve filmed some things that are upcoming.
Hopefully I get to produce in the next few years. I’d like to have my own product that I write, but whatever they allow me to do. I’m gonna do it until they figure out they have the wrong guy.

H: You’ll be doing more acting?
LG: Yes, I just did a small part in a film that comes out this year, and at the same time I’m going to more auditions. Trying to get more stuff going.
I’m doing that, trying to balance it with the stand-up and trying to make sure people still watch online.

H: How did stand-up come about for you?
LG: I have a lot of friends that I made over the last few years that also do social media, and they’ve been doing it longer than me. I’ve been watching them and they’ve been super encouraging.
One of my friends that does stand-up in NY performed in LA last year and he was like ‘come by the show, and do a few minutes’.
I said I don’t know if I can, but let’s do it. They say ‘si te da miedo, hazlo con miedo’ so I just did it, and I loved it.
So I went to NY with him and did a few minutes there. After that I said I think I have a few stories, kind of discovering my comedy. Hopefully people will like it and so far it’s going well.

H: So stand-up just happened accidentally, it wasn’t a career path?
LG: No, it was not part of my plans, none of this was part of my plans.

H: Let’s talk about your comedy tour.
LG: I’m doing a few places right now, the next one is Texas, then New Mexico, and a few other cities. We’re half way done. Meeting people is so exciting. When I began doing videos online I was by myself, in front of a green screen. It’s so nice to see people that are willing to make a night and go and see you. That’s really special.

H: What were your plans before becoming a social media sensation?
LG: Before this my plan was to do HOMBRE Magazine (laughs). I studied journalism for years, and I really wanted to be a reporter, local news, entertainment news, and I always wanted to do red carpet interviews. I loved it.
In college I wrote for the school paper and that’s what I really wanted.
But all this is also fine.

H: To what do you attribute your success this far?
LG. I got lucky.
A lot of it is luck. Just showing up. When you show up it gets better and I’ve learned that along the way. I’ve allowed myself to see things that I didn’t necessarily have in the plans. I didn’t even think about it. When you allow yourself to get out of your own plans you discover something crazy.
I’m having fun with it and I’ll do it as long as I can because its been such a dream.

H: What’s the best part of it?
LG: The best part has been connecting with people through laughter. When you meet people on the street it reminds you that these videos are not just numbers that you saw during the pandemic. They’re actual people. Sometimes when you’re in it you forget that comedy does so much for you. And that’s what we’re here for, a connection, a celebration.

H: How has your family reacted to your new found fame?
LG: They’re shocked, like me. My mom still takes some time to catch up. She’s constantly saying, lets relax, lets chill out, you’re still you.
And I’m like, I know! I know!
But check it out, I’m in HOMBRE Magazine, I’ve done it.
My dad is still in shock. I think just now they’re starting to see it as a job. It took a long time of them being like, alright, but are you working? I think now they say, ok it may be work.

H: To wrap up, any preview about what’s happening June 9?
LG: It’s gonna be party! It’s in a New York City hot spot. I’ve seen some of the concepts and I’m excited. This is not a normal thing. They’re being very intentional about setting the vibe. They’ll have food, activations, tastings, they’ll be a bunch of people there, and some very familiar faces.
