The NYNJ Host Committee for the FIFA World Cup 2026 aims to showcase the unmatched energy, diversity, and hospitality of the NYNJ region on the world stage. The goal is to deliver a world-class experience for athletes, fans, and partners, and ensure that the FIFA World Cup 2026 serves as a catalyst for community development, sustainability, and global connection. At the forefront of this mission is Alex Lasry, the organization’s Chief Executive Officer. In an exclusive interview he reveals plans for what will go down as ‘the biggest event in human history.”

The NYNJ Host Committee for the FIFA World Cup 2026 is the local organizing body responsible for delivering eight FIFA World Cup 2026 matches in the NYNJ region, including the Final match. The organization coordinates between key city, state, and federal stakeholders and FIFA to ensure a world-class event. In his role, Lasry oversees all facets of the committee’s work across the New York and New Jersey region, including coordination with local leaders, stadium operations, fan engagement, and legacy planning.

Lasry brings a unique blend of experience in government, sports, and tourism to this role. He most recently served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Travel and Tourism at the U.S. Department of Commerce (2023–2025), where he led national efforts to revitalize the tourism industry. Prior to that, he was a senior executive and part-owner of the Milwaukee Bucks, helping to transform the franchise into an NBA champion and a model of sports business innovation.

HOMBRE: What can you tell about the World Cup and the Finals coming to the New York/New Jersey area?
Alex Lasry: This is the first World Cup held  in the United States in thirty years. And this will be the biggest World Cup ever, which means our hosting of the World Cup finals will be, without exaggeration, the biggest event in human history.
The last World Cup was viewed by the same amount of people as the last 13 Super Bowls – combined.
When you think that soccer is the world’s sport, the world’s eyes will be upon us and the people that will be visiting us.
Our hope is to partner with iconic venues and destinations that will also speak to the authenticity of our region.

Fan Village in Rockefeller Center

H: What are some of the plans?
AL: We’ll have the official Fan Village right here in Rockefeller Center.  Then we’ll have a number of Fan Zones across New York City and the state of New York. We want this World Cup to be one where whether you’re at the game at MetLife Stadium or not, you’re getting the World Cup experience and you’re able to engage and be a part of it.

H: What should fans expect?
AL: We want to be sure that this World Cup, especially in this region, is accessible, affordable, and that if you’re traveling here from anywhere in the world you get that unique New York/ New Jersey experience.
Our region has a reputation, we’re the World’s Capital and so we want to be sure that when we’re welcoming people here we’re giving them what they’re expecting.
We are thrilled to be able to partner with Rockefeller Center on this Fan Village because when you think about New York City this landmark is one of the things you think about.

H: What will the Fan Village offer?
AL: If you want to watch the game you can come here, if you want to get a uniquely New York experience and be a part of the World Cup you will come to Rockefeller Center.
We’ll have viewing parties, shopping, dining, legends will be here.
We’ll have a number of things we’ll be announcing soon and I think it’ll be the premiere fan experience the World Cup will have.

H: What can you tell me about the Finals?
AL: New York/ New Jersey hosting the World Cup finals will be the biggest thing the region has ever had.
We want to be sure we’re putting on an event that speaks to the powers the region has and that will welcome the world. We want to leave a lasting legacy that will show that if you want to put a premier sports and entertainment event, you’re going to come here

H: How did you arrive at this position?
AL: I’ve worked in sports and entertainment my whole life and was very fortunate that Ms. Murphy (New Jersey First Lady Tammy Murphy, Chair of the Host Committee’s Board of Directors) called me as they were looking to take the Host Committee and this experience to the next level. For me, to be a part of the world’s game and the biggest event that will happen in human history was a no-brainer.
It was humbling to be asked to be a part of this.  Overall this has been a wonderful experience and one I will never forget.

Alex Lasry, CEO at FIFA World Cup 2026 NYNJ Host Committee

H: What is the best part of your position?
AL: The thing I always loved about working in sports is the things you get to do for the fans. At the end of the day sports is entertainment. What sports teaches and what it taught me when I was a kid playing basketball is to shape the man I’ve become. I’m hoping an event like this will help leave a lasting legacy for the next nine and ten year old’s to hopefully also say “You know what, I also want to go play for the US National Team, I want to play for the US Women’s National Team and lead the US to become the next global powerhouse in soccer,” for me that’s the best part.
