We recently visited Masseria dei Vini, prime location for holiday dining, and right next door is the ideal spot for dessert and light fare. Masseria Caffé  is a traditional Italian coffeehouse in Hell’s Kitchen serving a broad selection of freshly made sweets, coffees, and salads.

Cornetto all’Albicocca

Among the house specialties are Cornetto (often compared to a croissant but made with less butter and filled with options of custard cream, Nutella, pistachio (etc), and the Bigné (a cream puff filled with either gianduia cream or custard cream), Cannolo Siciliano (filled with sheep’s milk ricotta) and bomboloni (Italian doughnuts filled with Nutella, custard cream, and marmalade).

Cortado

Of course coffee selections are unbeatable. The Caffè’s espressocold brew, and nitro brew are all made with Lavazza coffee in the state-of-the-art espresso machine, the Victoria Arduino. Highlights include cortadoshakerato, espresso shaken with ice cubes and simple syrup; and the classic Italian staples of espressomacchiato, and cappuccino.

Prosciutto Sandwich

For something a little more substantial, but still lighter than a full meal selct from PanBrioiche (Italian ham, and asiago cheese or eggs, spinach, and tomato); pressed paninis, Parma, (prosciutto, homemade mozzarella, arugula, and extra virgin olive oi; and Tacchino (roasted turkey breast, asiago, rosemary aioli, and arugula).

Masseria Salad

Specialty salads include the Insalata di Grano, the house specialty salad, made with Apulia grains imported from Italy, seasonal vegetables, lemon, and dressed with extra virgin olive oil; and the Masseria with arugula, endives, radicchio, mushrooms, olives, roasted peppers.

Masseria Caffè has not forgotten that the holidays also entail shopping for loved ones, coworkers, and friends. With this in mind, the caffè is offering Italian specialty Gift Baskets that range from $55 and up, which can include:

  • Panettone or Pandoro – traditional Italian sweet bread
  • Torrone- Italian nougat
  • Taralli Pugliese
  • Amaretti cookies
  • Lavazza coffee
  • A variety of chocolates

Masseria Caffè is part of La Masseria Group, comprised of partners Peppe IueleEnzo Ruggiero, and father and son team Pino and Vito Coladonato. The space was designed by Libby Langdon, who transformed the former beauty salon into a warm and inviting cafe with high ceilings, blue floral Italian tile floors, large glass display cases, and walls adorned with black and white photographs of the Italian countryside and artistic shots of coffee latte art.

Everything was custom designed in Italy, including the ovens, the stainless-steel coffee counter, as well as the shelving. There is also a small shop of imported artisanal Italian products, all hand-selected by the owners, including Masseria group’s branded olive oil, and homemade grissini and biscotti.
