Film Forum, a nonprofit movie theater and alternative screening space for independent films in New York City‘s Greenwich Village,  and MIFUNE New York, the Michelin starred restaurant, are collaborating in hosting a dinner and a movie. This is to celebrate the Mifune Film Festival, featuring 33 films of the renowned Japanese actor, Toshiro Mifune – the restaurant’s namesake.

Festival attendees who provide proof of theatre ticket purchase at MIFUNE, will receive a $25 dinner discount. This deal starts this week and ends on March 31st.

The festival is co-presented by The Japan Foundation and will be showing all 16 collaborations between Toshiro Mifune and Director Akira Kurosawa, called the greatest actor-director partnership in film history by Film Critic David Shipman. Film Forum will also be showing rarities and rediscoveries in 35mm imported from the libraries of The Japan Foundation and The National Film Archive of Japan.

Toshiro Mifune is the revered Japanese actor famous for his emotional portrayal of disciplined, unmatched samurai warriors. His namesake restaurant, MIFUNE New York, is fueled by a cast of top young chefs with Michelin starred experience, displaying a level of refinement that would make its namesake proud.

MIFUNE features French-Washoku cuisine—traditional Japanese cooking that places supreme importance on the seasonal bounty of the land and sea with traces of impeccable French technique, served with Michelin-level quality and attention to detail.

The space was designed by Katsunori Takeuchi, a prolific Japanese designer known for minimalist designs inspired by nature. As you enter the restaurant, there is an 11-seat tasting counter, leading into the main dining room, a warmly lit space punctuated by natural wood accents, high ceilings with dramatic chandeliers, and three large shoji style panels on the far wall accented with the Mifune family crest.
There is a subterranean dining room with semi-private tables for groups of four to eight.

The restaurant focuses on French-infused Neo-Washoku cuisine. MIFUNE New York serves 8-course omakase tasting menus curated by Co-Executive Chefs Yuu Shimano (from Guy Savoy’s eponymous three Michelin-starred restaurant in Paris) and Tomohiro Urata (formerly of the three Michelin-starred La Maison Troisgros) which change daily based upon market availability. The omakase format allows the two-powerhouse duo to display their creativity, as they invent some dishes on the spot.

The full schedule for the Mifune Film Festival can be found here. The Film Forum Theatre is located at 209 West Houston Street in Greenwich Village, Manhattan.

The restaurant is located at 245 East 44th St. New York, NY 10017 between 2nd and 3rd AvenuePhone: 212-986-2800.
