Paco de Lucía Legacy Festival Takes Place This Week In New York City

Ruben BladesCarmen LinaresDiego ‘El Cigala,’ Farruquito are some of the artists that will pay tribute to guitarist Paco de Lucia at the Legacy Festival that will take place in New York City from February 20 – 24, marking the tenth anniversary of the passing of the musician from Algeciras.

Other artists include Al Di MeolaJose MerceRafael RiqueniChild Josele along with musicians who shared the stage with Paco de Lucía, such as Jorge PardoAntonio Serrano the Brazilian Ruben DantasJosé María BanderaAntonio Sanchez, Israel Suárez ‘Piranha,’ and Carles Benavent.

The Festival’s opening night gala at Carnegie Hall will take place February 20th featuring more than thirty artists on stage. This will mark the beginning of five days in which the memory of the guitar legend will be recognized,

On the 21st the Afro Latin Orchestra with Arturo O’Farrill, Alex Conde and his Big Band will perform some of the musician’s most emblematic songs and the book will be presented The enigma Paco de Lucía by César Suárez.

On February 22, a master class on the Andalusian cadence will be given at The Julliard School; the percussionist El Piraña will do the same at New York University with a clapping and percussion master class, and Lincoln Center will host a fusion concert jazz/Flemish  with Farruquito as guest artist.

On February 23, the Berklee Power Station will host the presentation of an unreleased album by Paco de Lucía and the film will be presented by the guitarist’s son, Curro Sánchez followed by a concert at the Orensanz Foundation Synagogue.

Finally, on the 24th there will be a concert at the jazz club Le Poisson Rouge, among other events.

This tribute it is about vindicating “the legacy and significance of a personality and a work that changed the way we understand flamenco and music in general” said his family during a presentation at the Ateneo de Madrid.

The vice president of the Paco de Lucía Foundation, Gabriela Canseco Vallejo, has indicated that this event is organized to honor each day of Paco de Lucía’s life. “We want him to stay alive, to never stop and to continue doing and telling things” he added, pointing out Carnegie Hall as the festival’s operations center.

Jorge Pardo, who has been part of Paco’s sextet, remembered him as “an older brother and an artist who has sown a lot, We all have a Paco de Lucía inside; each of us who are here has an experience with Paco, even if it is an afternoon listening to one of his albums. ”
