For first timers or those who simply need a refresher, check below to find some of Dr. Bowe’s tips for using natural deodorant.

HOMBRE: How is body odor created?
Dr. Whitney Bowe: Many people don’t realize that human sweat is odorless.
It’s when the bacteria under our arms combines with sweat that body odor is created.

H: What are the ingredients that make natural deodorants work?
DWB: Baking soda and magnesium are two naturally powerful odor neutralizing ingredients. When they are paired together – like in Schmidt’s new upgraded signature formula – they can keep body odor under control. This new formula offers odor protection for up to 24 hours.

Remember some people are sensitive to baking soda, and that’s okay too. It doesn’t mean you can’t use a natural deodorant. If you are sensitive to baking soda, there is a sensitive skin line that is baking soda-free but still controls body odor with magnesium.

H: What other ingredients do you recommend your patients look for in a natural deodorant?
DWB: I recommend nourishing ingredients to my patients like vitamin E, jojoba oil and coconut oil – all of which are in Schmidt’s upgraded signature formula. You can really feel those ingredients working when you glide the product over your skin.

H: How do some deodorants get their fragrance?
DWB: Schmidt’s uses a blend of essential oils and plant isolates to create their signature, addictive scents.
They never include any synthetic fragrances in their deodorant formulas. Many of my patients love the aromas of certain essential oils, but it’s important to know that not all oils agree with everyone’s unique body chemistry.

H: How can I test if an essential oil works for me?
DWB: I always recommend doing a patch test before using a new product, especially if it contains a fragrance. Simply scrape a bit of deodorant, place on your forearm, then cover with a bandaid. If your skin looks and feels normal after 48 hours, that’s a good indicator you can tolerate that particular product.

H: What is the microbiome and how can my deodorant impact it?
DWB: The microbiome is comprised of diverse bacteria that live in and on the skin. This bacteria is good for us. If the skin’s microbiome is disrupted by abrasive skincare products, this discontent can result in breakouts, rosacea flares, psoriasis, eczema, and even sensitive skin.
By changing the type of products we use under our arms, we can actually change the microbiome in that area, thereby changing our own body odor. So be sure to keep those bacteria happy and healthy by nourishing them with high quality products like Schmidt’s.
