Mezcal Meets Rosé For Cinco De Mayo With Sombra Reposé Mezcal

Just in time for Cinco de Mayo, there comes a new mezcal ready to become your go-to this summer – Sombra Reposé Mezcal, a first-of-its-kind Bordeaux-aged reposado. Mezcal meets Rosé in this new bottle, where the mezcal is hand-made in Oaxaca and then aged exclusively in Bordeaux wine barrels.

Reposé is a first-of-its-kind reposado made with Sombra’s Espadin mezcal. Sourced from the historic and renowned Château Léoville Poyferré, a second growth wine estate in St Julien, France, the barrels are filled and aged for up to six-months. The Limousin oak wine barrels soften the mezcal while enhancing its delicate botanical balance, bringing through a light Rosé color.

Sombra Reposé became available nationally on May 1st for $49.99, and is available for purchase on ReserveBar.com, and at local retailers and fine restaurants.

Founded in 2006, Sombra Mezcal is an artisanal mezcal made at Sombra’s palenque in Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca, Mexico. Sombra is made from high altitude, naturally-grown Espadín agave and distilled at the traditional strength of 90 proof. It’s best known for a subtly balanced taste with a hint of smoke; earning the brand top awards and recognition including a San Francisco World Spirits Double Gold and the Ultimate Recommendation as Best Agave Spirit in the World by F. Paul Pacult’s Spirit Journal.

“We are very excited for our latest expression, Sombra Reposé which uses our award-winning mezcal made from Espadin agave. It is fair trade and responsibly-sourced, and aged in French barrels that formerly held prestigious wine. This process produces a refined spirit with a beautiful rose-colored hue, hence the name Reposé (French for rested, similar to the Spanish reposado).” said Martha Cardoso, Sombra’s General Manager and Director of the Sombra Adobe Brick Project.

Sombra is widely known for its commitment to sustainability and, in particular, for The Adobe Brick Project, a community-focused program that upcycles distillation waste to create adobe bricks used to build houses for those in need. The brand was recently awarded “Most Sustainable and Environmentally Friendly Mezcal” by the Mezcal Institute.

Sombra Mezcal is a proud member of 1% For The Planet, donating at least 1% of sales to certified environmental charities and local educational initiatives in Oaxaca, Mexico. Sombra is one of a few mezcal brands that owns and operates its own Palenque. This ensures consistent quality, supply and environmentally friendly production methods.  Each step of Sombra’s production–from fermentation to distillation–has been reimagined to reduce its ecological impact while respecting artisanal traditions. Sombra’s sustainable initiatives include: natural grown agave, certified sustainable firewood, solar panels, use of an electric Tahona for agave crushing(no donkeys required) and upcycling distillation waste into adobe bricks for housing.
