He has spent two decades searching, and scaling, the planet’s most difficult and beautiful rock climbs. From bouldering to sport climbing to “psicobloc” (deep-water soloing), his meditative approach combined with his powerful, dynamic style make him a climbing pioneer.

Most recently, Sharma has been a host on HBO Max’s ultimate climbing competition series: The Climb. This is the perfect time to sit down with him and ask some of important questions about this challenging sport, and his fashion choices to do it comfortably, safely and in style. If you’re looking for fresh inspiration in your climbing game, you’ve found it.

HOMBRE: How did you get started in the sport of climbing?
Chris Sharma: I started climbing in 1993 when my mom brought me to a climbing gym in Berkeley when I was 12 . A few months later Pacific Edge gym opened in my home town of Santa Cruz, CA and I I basically never looked back since.

H: What’s your favorite climbing style?
CS: I like all styles of climbing. I’m attracted to aesthetic lines in nature. One of the great things in climbing is that there are so many styles and types of rock so it’s great to enjoy it all. But if I had to pick one style it would definitely be deep water soloing.

H: How does it feel when people climb the routes you set or repeat your first ascents?
CS: It’s a really proud feeling when you see someone get enjoyment out of something you’ve worked hard to create. Also it’s been really cool over the years to see certain climbs of mine become milestone achievements in other climbers careers. I’m proud to have influenced their climbing journey.

H: How does yoga play a role in your climb training?
CS: Climbing is a lot about keeping your body tight so it’s really good to have something like yoga to open your body up and keep balanced.

H: What features should we look for in climbing pants and shirts? (What to wear rock climbing)
CS: I look at materials, and fit most. I like a pant for example that I can move really well in yet will still be durable and have some abrasion resistance.

H: What advice do you have for an experienced climber who’s been off the wall for a while and wants to get back?
CS: I’d say, it’s really important to be patient. It can be frustrating coming back after a long time off. You have to pay your dues and build up the fitness and strength etc. It’s natural that it will take some time and it’s important to be mentally strong to avoid getting frustrated. Anyway I’m general it’s best not to compare yourself with past achievements. It can be frustrating but if you put the time in you will eventually get back to where you were. One of the best things about it though is the feeling of rediscovering and falling back in love with climbing.

H: How is sport climbing different from other kinds of climbing?
CS: Because sport climbing are protected with bolts, it’s generally one of the safest types of climbing. And so it gives you the freedom to really explore the movement and focus on pushing your limits.

H: Which prAna climbing styles can you not live without?
CS: Without a doubt the Stretch Zion Pant for outdoor climbing.
